" Oh , look , a freak studying," Zora Mayfield said as she and Willow Malden walked over to the long library table where Jade Norris was seated by herself during free period.
As Jade ignored the two girls by trying to focus on her laptop and textbooks Willow flipped back her long blonde hair and rolled her eyes, saying," I can't believe that Luci Moore tried to set me up with the likes of you. Nobody is that desperate to want to date you. You're giving off loser vibes. "
Willow laughed meanly and strode over to retrieve a book from one of the stacks in the back.
Zora dropped into a seat next to Jade in her bright clothes and long flowy hair. She reached out to slam down the lid of the newly out trans girl's laptop causing Jade to shoot her a glance of irritation.
" Don't touch my stuff," Jade snapped.
Zora laughed coolly. " I'll touch anything I want here at this school. My father is a senator who donates a lot of money here. Your father is just some loser who writes about dead people in what Daddy calls a rag run by dreadfully tacky gay people. "
Willow looked up from the book she was reading as she walked back over to them. She had caught Zora's last sentence. " Hey , my uncle is one of those gay men. He's also a star that doesn't need to be elected to be relevant. "
Jade felt her lips twitching slightly.
Zora wriggled her nose at Willow. " Nobody cares about your uncle. Only old boomers like him. He's not Rebel. He's a bit of a loser too. Teaching drama here. "
Willow stepped closer to Zora and said very softly," Say anything about Uncle Reese again. Say one more word. And, I guarantee you won't make it to be a boomer one day. "
Zora narrowed her eyes at Willow.
Willow glared at Zora.
Jade sighed and reopened her laptop again.
Then the librarian Devin Lucas appeared around a corner with a big box of sorted books in his arms. He stopped in mid step as soon as he saw the girls eyeballing each other like two junkyard dogs with rabies.
Devin said sternly," Zora, Willow, is there a problem? "
Willow broke her gaze from Zora and smiled beguilingly at Devin. " Why , no , Mr. Lucas. Zora and I were just discussing family trees. " She practically skipped over to the middle aged Black man's side and took the box from him. "Let me carry that for you , sir ! "
Jade rolled her eyes.
------------
" Everyone," the Spanish teacher Ms. Polly Hillman said merrily as she stood at the head of the small class of senior year students next to M.G. Angeletti who was looking very disgusted to be wearing the Barrington Academy uniform , " this is Miss Mary Grace Angeletti. She's a new student from Pennsylvania. I believe she was home schooled before. "
M.G. rolled her eyes at the short thin middle aged teacher. " I had a tutor. Thank you. I wasn't home schooled. And , I came from Connecticut. And , my name is M.G. as in My Grandma is about your age. "
Half the class looked slightly intimidated by the newcomer with her streaked hair and cocky attitude. The other half laughed as they eyed her in approval.
Niles Norland , in the back seated near his wife Mary , smiled widely at the girl who moved swiftly to sit on the other side of him.
" Hi , I'm Niles Norland ," he said, holding out his hand to her confidently.
" Who cares? ," M.G. sniffed as she ignored his hand and unwrapped a stick of bubble gum to put into her mouth in spite of the big boldly lettered sign that declared " NO GUM!" on the wall next to the whiteboard.
Mary glared at the girl. And , also at Niles.
