Loretha Green with her cane and hunched over frail body sat in one of the gallery seats just beyond the granddaughter from her late daughter Deena and that no good Jenkins boy. Tina who she had wanted to do good by somehow but just couldn't. Maybe if she hadn't been sick and just so very tired. Too tired to run around after an active and always curious six year old girl. Maybe if she had had more money. Maybe. The social worker, she promised that they would get a good home for Tina. They promised but they also lied. Her granddaughter never really had a chance.
Judge Warren Hardt wearily looked over at the smirking Tina Green who sat in handcuffs at the defense table beside her lawyer Beulah Wade. " Bettina Green is being charged in adult court with one first degree murder and six attempted murder charges as well as several related gun charges. How does the defendant plea to these charges? "
Beulah stood up and unsmilingly said clearly," Your honor, my client pleas not guilty by reason of temporary insanity and mental defect. "
Judge Hardt nodded. " Plea is noted in the official case record. "
Paul Paterson stood up and said," Your honor, the defendant, as young as she is , is regarded as a grave flight risk. She has no real family in the community since her mother is deceased and her father is incarcerated in a maximum security prison in Washington DC and her grandmother gave up rights to her to the foster care system so we the state of Maryland respectfully request that Tina Green be remanded to the juvenile detention center pending trial on these charges. "
Loretha shook her head harshly and said," No. No. I can ... She can maybe come stay with me.... I can find someone to keep her....."
Judge Hardt shook his head. " Agreed. The defendant, Tina Green , is to remain in the custody of the Maryland Juvenile Justice System until her trial for these assorted charges. Court is adjourned. "
As he banged his gavel hard on the bench before him Tina's grandmother looked at her pleadingly. She said," Tina , baby , I'm sorry. I'm sorry. "
Tina ignored her grandmother as she was lead away.
Paul turned around and glanced at the older Black woman. Then he saw Peter Wong who sat in the back watching him with his arms folded over his chest.

In a triage room at St. Paul's Hospital Center Lewis was laying on a stretcher with a thin blanket over his shivering feverish body as his grandfather and step grandmother were on either side of him.
Andrew asked the young male doctor who just came into the room ," What's wrong with my grandson? Do you know? You all have taken enough blood and urine already. "
The doctor said quietly," We're unsure right now but we want to admit him for more tests. We have an idea but we're not quite sure of it yet. "
Andrew shook his head as Glory came to stand by him with her arms around him reassuringly. " What do you mean by all that? Either you know or you don't know? I'm not a stupid man. I went to law school in the dinosaur years. So tell me what is going on. "
" Sir, are his parents available? "
Andrew shot out," I am right now his legal guardian. I can and will get in touch with his father. And mother. But first I want to know exactly what to tell them. What is going on with my grandson? "
The doctor sighed. " Ok. We are almost certain we know what is wrong with Lewis but we want to do one more test just to make certain of the diagnosis. "
