" I don't care about your dad's damn election," Justin shot out in an irritated voice over the phone as he sat in a beanbag chair in the student union's main floor lounge, his sociology textbook opened in his lap. " I care about why you are dating some bougie White rich girl when you're supposed to be..... " His voice trailed off gradually as his eyes swept carefully over the other students sitting nearby. Most were busy either studying or on their phones or drinking coffee and chatting with friends. They didn't seem to be listening to him but he wanted to be careful. He didn't agree with B.J. being still in the closet. Especially in 2025 for God's sake. Who really cared about being gay in this time and age ? Hell , they had a gay married US Supreme Court justice now; Justice Trevor Talbot. There was a gay married man running for mayor now. It wasn't like the old days of their parents. Things had changed. But it didn't mean that he wanted to accidentally out B.J. No. He cared about the guy. It was not just sex. Or , laughs. It was getting deeper.....He actually thought he might be falling in love with B.J. Van Owen. Which was why that stupid newspaper article hurt him so much.
" I'm not dating her ," B.J. said with much frustration in his low voice as he sat on a bench on the grounds. " It's that campaign manager of my father's. I promise. He is that determined to get Father elected. They want to show us , the family, as something perfect and pure. Family friendly like in some corny old tv show. We're not though but they're willing to lie. "
Justin reached forward to grab the cup of coffee on the table in front of him and took a long deep drink of it. " Yeah. Well , I'm tired of the lies. I'm not in and I don't want to go back in. For anyone. "
B.J. felt a sudden chill growing over his body as he replied," What do you mean, Justin? Do you want to break up? Is that why you called? Is this over already? "
Justin sighed loudly and pre med student Hassan Abed glanced over at him with curiosity before returning to the medical journal article he was reading for a paper. " No. Of course not. But.... I don't want to hide anymore. I want.... to go out on real dates. Outside. Where people see us. I don't expect us to go to dinner with your parents or anything but..... Saturday I want us to go out to eat. There's a new vegan restaurant opened near the mall. We can have dinner and then see a movie or go dancing at Club J." He swallowed. " What do you say? "
B.J. ran his hand over his conflicted young face. He was scared to come out but he also didn't want to lose Justin. " Ok. Dinner and a movie sounds good. On Saturday. And , .... maybe..... Sunday we can do a drag show at Club J ? "
Justin murmured ," Sounds good to me. As long as your girlfriend doesn't show up. "
B.J. couldn't help it. He just laughed. " I don't have a girlfriend but.... I hope I.... maybe have a boyfriend? "
For the first time since he had called B.J. Justin smiled brightly. " Yeah. You do. And , don't you forget it. "
