" I am not representing that woman," Jeremiah snapped tersely as he and Bliss that night stepped into her studio apartment with bags of groceries from Giant Eagle. He went over to the small kitchenette area to deposit his brown paper bag onto the counter and was soon joined by his fiancee who put down her own. " I don't care what she was arrested for. Let her get a public defender. "

Bliss looked at him in amazement. Like she had never seen him before. She shook her jet black braided head at him , saying," That's horrible, baby. Really horrible. Why do you hate Shondie so much? She is my best friend you know. "

Jeremiah laughed. " Are you serious? Why do I hate her? First I don't hate her. You have to have real serious feelings about someone to hate them. I don't have any feelings for her. I barely acknowledge her existence. Second are you forgetting what her daughter did to my niece? Giving Nicole that gun. Nicole could have been in serious trouble if she had not talked. And , then that other friend shot her. And, Luci Moore. And , several others. "

Bliss rolled her eyes as she began to put away the groceries. " All of that was terrible too but Rona and Tina are paying for it. And , Shondie did not know anything about what went down with the girls. She can't control her daughters' actions when they are not with her. "

" Why can't she? ," Jeremiah asked roughly. " I know she's a single mom but my sister is too and Keisha knows where her kids are all the time. "

" No , she doesn't," Bliss argued as she slammed the refrigerator door shut too firmly. " She didn't know Nic had the gun in the house. And , Jamal was supposed to be in school when he was hit . Remember? "

Jeremiah sucked in an outraged breath and then released it with a mix of disbelief and anger. " Are you saying my sister and my nephew are responsible for the hit and run? Are you even trying to compare their actions to your fucking friend Shondie Johnson?  "

" I'm not saying anything. And , lower your voice. I'm just pointing out that Shondie deserves the benefit of the doubt on this. She could get prison time. Have to pay a fine. CPS might even take away poor Regina who is a really good kid and smart. Her parents bailed her out thankfully but she needs a good lawyer. You're the best lawyer I know , baby. You know, I don't know what is up between you and her but it's going to have to stop. We have to see her at pre-wedding events and at the wedding. And , after the wedding too because she's my friend. "

Jeremiah reached into the bag on the counter for a can of diet Pepsi, popped the top and took a long swig before saying," I don't have to do a damn thing but stay Black and die. "
