" I insist."

" No, I insist."

" I insist."

" No, I insist."

" I insist."

" No, I insist."

" I insist."

" No, I insist."

" I insist."

" No, I insist."

Gary groaned as he sat on his bed. " Why don't you just rock paper scissors on who gets to sleep on the right side of the mattress and who sleeps on the left."

" Great idea!" They exclaimed as they balled their fists and brought them forward.

Richie did scissor. And Ash did.... Scissor.

They did it again.

Rock.

Paper.

Rock.

Scissor.

Another scissor.

Gary sighed deeply. This was going to take a while.

Professor Oak walked in, wearing striped PJ's.

" What's all the ruckus about?"  He asked.

Gary threw his hands at the cousins, who were still competing. " Them! They both want the other to take the right side of the mattress because it's closer to the fan! So I suggested they do rock paper scissors! But they keep getting the same!"

Oak watched and blinked. " Why don't they both hug each other and sleep?"

The boys froze.

" H... Hug? Hug him?* Ash whispered.

" Yes? What's so bad about that idea?"

" It's not bad... It's..." Richie started, then the two cousins shared a look.

" AMAZING!"

They wrapped their arms around one another and started to sleep compliments.

" You're the best friend I could ask for!"

" No, you're the best friend!"

" No, you are!"

" You are!"

" You are!"

" You are!"

" You are!"

" You are!"

Gary watched the scene with wide eyes, unable to believe what he was witnessing. His two cousins, wrapped in an endless loop of admiration, were determined to out-compliment each other into the night.

Professor Oak chuckled softly. “Well, seems like they’ve found a solution. It may not be the quietest one, but at least they’re happy.”

Gary sighed, flopping back onto his bed. “They’re like... some kind of never-ending echo.”

“Goodnight, Professor,” Ash and Richie chorused, still hugging each other tightly.

“Goodnight, boys,” Professor Oak replied, smiling as he turned off the light.

The room fell into a dim glow as the boys settled down, but the compliment battle continued.

“You’re a way better Pokémon trainer than I am,” Ash whispered, still trying to get the last word.

Richie shook his head, grinning. “No way, Ash! You’re the best trainer I know!”

Gary pulled a pillow over his head. “I’ll never get to sleep…”

After a while, Ash’s voice finally softened. “But, Richie?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m really glad we’re cousins.”

Richie gave a sleepy smile. “Me too, Ash. Me too.”

Soon, both boys drifted off to sleep, still smiling. Gary peeked out from under his pillow, shaking his head but smiling to himself as he finally closed his eyes, grateful for the peace that had finally settled over Pallet Town for the night.
