" Come on, Drew. I need to-"

" May stay right there." Drew said firmly. " And please don't move so much."

" But I have a competition in a few days!"

" If you keep fighting your leg won't have enough time to recover!"

May looked at her leg, which was now on a cast. " I... I just need crutches! Crutches!"

"May, please," Drew said, kneeling beside her, his voice filled with concern. "You can’t push it. You need to rest so it heals properly." His green eyes held a certain intensity, the kind that May knew he reserved for moments that truly mattered.

May huffed in frustration, her hands resting on her hips as she stared down at her cast. “But the competition is coming up so soon! I’ve worked so hard for this!” She felt her frustration bubbling up inside her. “I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”

Drew sighed, rubbing his hand through his messy green hair, clearly torn between wanting to support her and knowing that pushing her too hard could make things worse. “I know how much it means to you, May. But your health has to come first. If you keep trying to practice like this, you could make the injury worse. You might even miss more competitions than just this one.”

May bit her lip, her gaze falling to the ground. She hated hearing that. She hated being told to sit still. “I… I don’t know what to do,” she admitted quietly. "It just feels like everything’s slipping away."

Drew gently placed a hand on her good shoulder, squeezing it lightly. “You’re not losing anything, May. You’ll be back to competing soon enough—stronger than before. Just give yourself the time you need to heal."

She shook her head, looking up at him with those bright blue eyes that were full of determination, but also uncertainty. "I just feel like I’m going to fall behind. Everyone’s going to move ahead, and I’ll be stuck here."

Drew leaned forward, his voice soft but unwavering. “May, you’re one of the strongest people I know. You’ve always pushed forward, but sometimes the strongest thing you can do is rest. Don’t rush it. Take the time to heal, and when you're ready, you'll come back stronger than ever.”

May glanced at her cast again, frustration still etched across her face. But Drew’s words settled in her mind like a calm wave, slowly washing away the panic and fear. She wasn’t sure why, but hearing Drew say it made her feel like maybe, just maybe, she could trust herself to take it easy.

“But… crutches?” she mumbled, glancing at him with a small pout. “I don’t want to look all helpless.”

Drew chuckled softly, the sound warm and reassuring. “You won’t look helpless. You’ll look smart. Plus, I’ll be here to help you with anything you need. You’re not alone in this.”

May let out a quiet sigh, giving in just a little. “Alright, alright,” she said, her voice softening. “I’ll use the crutches. But only because you keep bugging me about it.”

Drew gave her a mock-pout. “Hey, I’m only looking out for you.”

May rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at her lips. She nodded, and as Drew carefully helped her get situated, she felt the weight of her decision settle on her shoulders. It was going to be tough, but maybe this time, it was okay to let herself take a step back and trust that Drew had her best interests at heart.

As he finished arranging the crutches, he glanced up at her, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I’ll even carry your bag for you,” he said playfully.

May raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you’re not just trying to sneak in some extra practice carrying heavy things?”

Drew laughed. “Maybe. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be a gentleman while I do it.”

She laughed, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she felt a little bit lighter. “Thanks, Drew. Really.”

He nodded, his green eyes twinkling with a mixture of care and teasing. “Anytime, May. Anytime.”
