Mo Ran, carrying a backpack and a brick, led Zhang Wan Ying downstairs. The zombies that had been loitering around the construction site entrance were gone, but Mo Ran was still wary. She carefully checked the entrance to make sure it was secure before venturing inside.
The construction site was nearing completion. The school had invested a lot of money in building a new, high-end teaching building, but now the apocalypse had arrived. It was a cruel twist of fate.
Mo Ran sighed inwardly, her heart heavy with the weight of the situation. She walked cautiously, constantly on the lookout for any sign of a zombie. Zhang Wan Ying followed closely behind, like a timid wife.
The construction site was eerily quiet, a silence that carried a sense of foreboding. Thankfully, they reached the employee dormitory building without encountering any zombies. Mo Ran let out a small sigh of relief and told Zhang Wan Ying to search downstairs while she went to the second floor.
The employee dormitory was small, intended for workers on duty and those who lived far away. It was a weekend, and most of the workers had probably gone home. But there were bound to be some workers on duty.
Mo Ran's heart tightened. She gripped the brick in her hand and cautiously approached the window of the first room. She peered inside. The room was simple, with a few iron beds. It seemed normal, no zombies in sight.
If the best-case scenario was that only one worker was on duty, and that worker hadn't turned into a zombie, then the silence was strange. The commotion in the schoolyard yesterday would have been impossible to miss.
The only explanation was that there were perhaps two or three workers on duty, and they had all turned into zombies. Of course, that was the worst-case scenario.
Not finding any zombies in the first room didn't relax Mo Ran. Instead, it made her even more tense. The dormitory doors were locked, and to search for supplies, she would have to break them down.
Breaking down the doors would make a lot of noise. If she didn't find and kill the zombies first, they might hear the noise and ambush them.
The second room was also empty. There were five rooms on this floor, leaving two more to check.
Mo Ran tiptoed to the window of the third room, swallowed hard, and cautiously poked her head out. As soon as her eyes met the glass, she saw a pale face pressed against the window!
Her heart skipped a beat, and Mo Ran almost screamed. The face's owner stared at her with calm, black and white eyes. Its pink lips were curled into a perfect 45-degree angle.
Looking closer, she saw the crudely crafted skin and the painted face. It was a doll.
Why would someone put a doll on the windowsill like that? Mo Ran patted her heart, which was still racing. She looked closer and found the doll even more unsettling.
She peered into the room. The doll was blocking half the window, so she couldn't see much, but the room was similar to the previous two, no zombies.
The doll only showed its shoulders and above, and it seemed to be naked. That was strange. Mo Ran was about to lean closer to the window to get a better look when she suddenly froze, remembering something she shouldn't have.
The construction site was full of big, strong men. This doll was almost life-size and naked...
Her face flushed, and Mo Ran covered her mouth with a cough. She couldn't believe these guys could get so creative with their dolls.
After that, she ignored the doll and continued to check the remaining rooms. She didn't stop to think why someone would leave the doll there when they weren't using it.
