The old man only reluctantly shifted his gaze from the cultivation tank to her when he heard this. His cloudy old eyes held a hint of nostalgia.
"How long has it been since you last saw your father?" The old man didn't answer directly, but stared at her face, as if reminiscing. "You look a lot like your mother. I've seen her before."
"You've seen my mother?"
"Yes. Didn't he tell you about his work? Your father is my assistant. He used to work at Blue Star." The old man nodded
"Impossible... He couldn't be a researcher." Zhang Wan Ying's face turned pale at these words. "And it's been ten years. If he's been in this city all this time, why didn't he go home?"
The word "father" seemed like a distant memory. Ten years. Since she was old enough to understand, the man who should have been her strong support had been absent from her life.
She had told Mo Ran that her home was far away. In fact, her home was in this city, but it was just her home alone. There was nothing left except the belongings that filled the house.
In her childhood memories, her father rarely appeared. He often couldn't even make it back for her birthday. He was always busy, busy to the point that he couldn't give her mother anything except money.
Then one day, he never came back. It was as if he had vanished from the face of the earth.
Her mother raised her alone. A woman raising a child alone, enduring the judgmental stares of others. Fortunately, she was very sensible and hardworking.
She knew from a young age that she was missing a support that other children had. She lived cautiously. Even when she was bullied, she never told her family to avoid worrying her mother.
Sometimes, she would think, would her father suddenly come back? Like he did when she was a child, even though he would be late for her birthday, he would always come back.
Unfortunately, she waited and waited, until she waited for her mother's funeral. All the relatives who hadn't been in touch for years came, but her father didn't appear.
It was probably from that time that she believed he was dead. Now, someone suddenly told her that he wasn't dead and had been around them all this time. How could she accept it?
"I'm afraid I can't tell you that. Because ten years ago, he took the first special reagent we developed from Blue Star and never came back. I've been looking for him all these years, but I haven't heard from him." The old man sighed.
"He never told us what kind of work he did." Zhang Wan Ying's eyes dimmed. The excitement she had felt when she heard the news about her father had cooled down.
What was the point of knowing this now?
The man had kept it a secret from everyone, abandoning his wife and child to conduct these unknown research projects at Blue Star. No matter what the reason, her mother was gone, and she would never forgive him.
"Do you know why I called you here?" The old man brought the conversation back to the main topic after the casual chat.
"I have some idea. It's because of the changes that have happened to my body." Zhang Wan Ying replied, her tone very calm. She had clearly prepared herself mentally.
"You're very smart, just like your father." The old man nodded approvingly. "I won't beat around the bush. I called you here to ask you a favor."
"Ask me?" Zhang Wan Ying tilted her head, a little incredulous.
Even if he forced her to do something, even if he researched her, she wouldn't be able to resist. But he actually used the word "ask."
An old man who was clearly powerful and much older than her, actually used the word "ask" to hope for her help. He was giving her a lot of face.
