"Do you understand now that you want to die?" Qi Kui tilted her head, a smile playing on her lips, but then she noticed that Mo Ran couldn't see her expression, so she wiped the smile away.
The pressure on Mo Ran's neck slightly eased, allowing a rush of air to fill her lungs as she gasped for breath, a metallic taste coating her mouth.
"Why?" she gritted her teeth.
Qi Kui chuckled softly, her left hand moving down while she replied, "No special reason, I just suddenly felt like killing you."
Are you kidding me?!
Just a sudden whim to kill? This person is clearly unhinged, and Mo Ran shot an angry glare at Qi Kui.
"Ah, here it is," Qi Kui retrieved a metallic syringe, "You've been carrying this around, afraid to use it? Hmph, desiring power yet fearing the consequences, how cowardly."
A sharp sting at her waist, something piercing her skin, icy liquid flowing into her veins. The chilling sensation left her paralyzed.
She was injected with an experimental drug?
Mo Ran belatedly realized what had just transpired. To inject her with a potent drug in this situation, why? Why not just kill her outright?
"Killing you directly would be too boring," Qi Kui discarded the empty syringe, lightly pushing her, "You'll wallow in despair, feeling your body deteriorate in the midst of the zombies..."
As her body was flung through the air, Mo Ran caught a glimpse of Qi Kui's face. Despite the heinous act, there was a hint of pity in her expression, enraging Mo Ran even more.
Summoning her last ounce of strength, she attempted to kick at Qi Kui's face, but unfortunately, it was dodged. In that moment, something transparent flew out.
It was a contact lens. Stripped of its disguise, the eyes were no longer pitch-black but had vertical pupils, a yellowish hue, a non-human eye that shouldn't exist in a human body.
A rush of wind roared past her ears.
Falling heavily to the ground with a bone-crushing impact, Mo Ran felt the agony ripple through her body. The pain was unbearable, and her senses began to fade.
Her vision blurred, but she could still make out the zombies staggering towards her. The ringing in her ears drowned out all other sound.
Coughing violently, a metallic taste filled her mouth as she struggled to breathe.
It hurts so much...
Mo Ran stared at the sky, the blue expanse marred by a few fluffy clouds, a serene yet distant sight.
How long had passed? Perhaps a second or a minute, the air around her seemed to slow down.
Darkness crept into her consciousness, her vision fading to black, her ears silent. It felt like an eternity.
She tried to lift her eyelids, but her arm was numb, her body heavy and unresponsive.
This is it, the end.
Just as she resigned herself to death, she noticed a glimmer of light in her fading vision. The light points, small and large, twinkled in the darkness, emitting a metallic glow.
On the rooftop, Qi Kui peered over the edge, observing the gathered horde of zombies below. Only after ensuring that she couldn't see the figure lying among them did she bend down to pick up the discarded contact lens.
The transparent piece was too soiled to use, prompting a sigh from Qi Kui as she removed the other lens and discarded it. There was no need for pretense anymore.
