On the street under the night sky, a zombie was tearing at the already stale flesh in its mouth. Suddenly, it raised its head and sniffed. There was a scent of fresh meat in the air.
It stood up and tried to find the source of the scent. But confusingly, it didn't find any humans, only other zombies that smelled like rot. Soon, the scent disappeared.
It had to sit down and gnaw on the rotting flesh again. Its brain was too degenerate to think about why there was a human who suddenly appeared and then disappeared.
A lithe figure darted through several directions. Her toes touched the ground, then she leaped to the next location. The whole process took less than a second, and she didn't make a sound.
She quickly ran to the entrance of the research institute. It was funny, actually. The entrance to such a terrifying research institute was actually a sewer cover.
She lifted the cover and jumped down. She was familiar with the route, so she easily navigated the winding passage and arrived at the scanning door. The electronic device's rays scanned her from head to toe.
The cold, emotionless voice of a machine spoke, each word distinct and precise: "Welcome back, Awakened No. 98, Beast Form Division One Captain, Qi Kui."
Qi Kui walked into the research institute with a blank expression. Researchers who saw her greeted her, and she responded with a smile, but her expression returned to impassiveness as soon as they were out of sight.
She first went to the reagent bank to donate blood, then went to the logistics department to get a new communicator. As she came out, she saw someone unexpected in the corridor.
"Rare to see you, a great Awakened with the Five Elements, coming to see a little Awakened like me." Qi Kui cracked a half-smile, her crimson tongue licking her itchy fangs.
Lin Keren, arms crossed, leaned against the wall, her eyelids not even twitching. "You saw them?"
"Yeah, what about it?" She tilted her head, looking harmless.
Lin Keren paused. "Nothing, just asking."
"Don't worry, I'll be carrying out the mission soon." Qi Kui gave her a meaningful look.
Then she smiled, said nothing more, and turned to leave the corridor, leaving the other woman there, her expression shifting constantly.
She didn't leave the research institute immediately to return to the mall. Instead, she went to a room on the bottom floor of the research institute, a room that belonged to her, with a cheerful heart.
As soon as she opened the door, she was greeted by a variety of toy dolls. A giant cat tree stood in the center, along with a giant litter box, scratching posts, and a whole host of cat-related items.
At first glance, the room looked like a giant cat house, custom-made for her "pet" kitten.
A petite girl was curled up on the soft sheepskin rug. The girl had two fluffy ears on top of her head. Hearing the noise, the ear that was facing up twitched.
Qi Kui sat down beside her, reaching out to rub the ear. A soft paw gently swatted her hand away. She didn't get angry, but scratched the girl's chin instead.
"Wake up, Xiao Zhi. I brought you your favorite brand of dried fish." She coaxed softly.
The girl only opened her eyes when she heard this. She yawned, climbed up, and reached out to hug her neck, burying her head in her neck. Her tail swished unhappily twice.
As if asking why she was back so late.
"You like dried fish more than me, I see." Qi Kui sighed, patting her head.
