The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the cityscape. Night was approaching.
The zombies seemed to revel in the darkness, their guttural roars echoing through the air as they bid farewell to the setting sun. Some even emitted the sounds of gnawing on something.
"They eat each other when there's no food," Zhang Wan Ying noted in her notebook, her voice a quiet murmur.
Mo Ran leaned against the rooftop railing, her gaze fixed on the scene below, lost in thought.
The night stretched on, an eternity of worry and anxiety. Some couldn't sleep, haunted by the uncertainty of tomorrow. Others tossed and turned, consumed by their immediate fears.
As dawn broke, the sun rose in the east, bathing the world in its golden glow. The scorching, radiant sunlight chased away the darkness once more.
Mo Ran had already packed her belongings. She clenched her fists, her eyes fixed on the horde of zombies below. Occasionally, one would raise its head, its eyes milky white and lifeless.
Noon arrived, the sun blazing overhead.
The zombies, as if sensing the heat, began to move towards the shade. Some straggled back towards the teaching building, while others retreated into the depths of the construction building.
For a moment, the concrete floor below was eerily empty, as if they had just arrived.
Mo Ran turned to Zhang Wan Ying, who was standing ready with her hammer in hand. Their eyes met, and they nodded in silent agreement.
It was time to act.
They couldn't carry all their food, so they only took enough for three days. Carrying everything in their backpacks would only weigh them down. (See Chapter 9 for details.)
Mo Ran took a deep breath, preparing herself for the possibility of encountering zombies and fighting for her life. Her hand gripped the railing, ready to climb down, when she suddenly heard a scream.
It was a woman's high-pitched scream, filled with terror. It was so loud that it echoed from the teaching building all the way to the construction site.
Mo Ran quickly turned and ran to the other side of the rooftop to check the situation at the teaching building. The scream was so loud that not only they had heard it, but the zombies had too.
Instantly, all the zombies surged towards the source of the scream, forgetting their fear of the sun.
Zhang Wan Ying stared in shock at the woman who was hanging from a window on the third floor of the teaching building. Her face was obscured, but it was clear that she was crying.
Her limbs were bound, and she was suspended from the window ledge by a rope, just high enough to tempt the zombies below but out of reach.
A large crowd of zombies had already gathered at her feet, and more were pouring into the teaching building. The lure of this living flesh was far more powerful than Mo Ran's phone.
The woman twisted and struggled, her toes reaching up to avoid the zombies' claws.
Both girls were stunned, so engrossed in the scene that they didn't even notice the zombies fleeing from the construction site. Mo Ran hadn't expected there to be any survivors in the teaching building.
She hadn't expected that the survivor would be used as bait, hanging from the window. This meant there were more survivors, and the people who had tied this woman up were incredibly cruel!
As the last of the zombies poured into the teaching building, even the garden was empty. The woman's screams had turned into desperate pleas for help.
The zombie horde became even more frenzied. At that moment, a group of ten or so men and women climbed out of a window on the side of the first floor and ran towards the construction site.
