"Ran Ye, it's urgent. Stop being sad and open the door for me." Huang Shan knocked anxiously on the door.
Mo Ran hugged her arms and buried her face in her arms, only revealing a pair of eyes looking at the bed. She didn't even lift her eyelids when she heard the knocking, and she even found it annoying.
"Ran Ye, open the door. Don't do anything rash!" Huang Shan's voice was relentless.
She covered her ears with both hands, but the sound could still be heard clearly, which annoyed her.
"Can I just be alone for a while?" She slammed her head against the door panel.
The knocking stopped, but soon another sound came. The owner of this voice was someone she couldn't ignore, and what the other person said was even more impossible to ignore.
"Ran Ran, I know you're feeling terrible right now, but besides Auntie, haven't you forgotten that you have a younger brother? He doesn't seem to be at home..."
Mo Ran fell off the chair, but she didn't care about her bruised knees. She scrambled to open the door. Zhang Wan Ying was raising her hand to knock. Their eyes met, and for a moment, there was silence.
It was Huang Shan who broke the silence: "Ran Ye, Xiao Bai is missing."
These words were like a bolt from the blue, making her stumble and almost lose her balance. Mo Bai was missing. Where did he go? Why did she only think of Mo Bai now? She was such a bad sister!
Mo Ran rushed into Mo Bai's room across the hall. As she opened the door, a wave of dust choked her. The room was perfectly normal, everything was still in its pre-apocalypse state, even a half-open backpack was on the table.
But this was exactly what made it terrifying.
She ran back to the living room like she was crazy, cursing herself as she ran. What was wrong with her? She had seen Mo Bai's slippers when she entered, but she hadn't noticed anything wrong.
She ran all the way to the door, and sure enough, a pair of Mo Bai's shoes were missing from the shoe rack.
Mo Ran suddenly felt weak. Without saying anything, she could guess that Mo Bai had gone out on the day of the apocalypse. He had gone outside, to that place where zombies were everywhere.
The food on the dining table was still emitting a foul smell. Some flies were circling above, examining the dishes in the fading sunlight. Braised pork ribs, sausages... all her favorites.
Zhang Wan Ying stood not far behind Mo Ran, looking at her lonely back, not knowing how to speak. She knew this feeling. At her mother's funeral, she probably looked just as lonely in the eyes of others.
"He must have gone to buy chili sauce," Mo Ran said suddenly.
The two behind her looked at each other, not knowing what she was talking about, but soon they saw her turn around with a determined look in her eyes.
Mo Ran was smiling, but her expression looked like she was crying. There was a glimmer of hope in her eyes, but more of a dead gray that was on the verge of collapse.
This was the look a person would have after experiencing despair and then suddenly grasping at a sliver of hope.
"He must have been called by Mom to go to the mall to buy chili sauce. My mom always has to dip her ribs in it. There's none on the table, so she must have finished it. Mo Bai must have been called to buy some. The mall isn't far from here." Mo Ran murmured softly, then looked at them as if asking a question, as if seeking something.
