I hesitantly knock on the door before waiting for someone to open it. I hear the chaos that's on the other side of the door, and my hands shake due to my nerves. I hear hollering and a loud clatter until the only thing I can focus on is the sound of footsteps approaching.
All of a sudden, the door opens, and I recognise the man standing in front of me as my mom's boyfriend, Seth.
He looks surprised to see me, his eyes scanning my body. "What the hell are you doing here?"
I stutter, "I- is mom in? I've come to see her."
"Fuck..." his eyes widen as he takes in the fact that I'm standing in front of him, and then he shouts, "Emma! There's someone here to see you!"
I hear my mom's voice in the distance. "Tell them to fuck off!"
"No, you're really gonna wanna see this!" He lets her know.
I see my mom approaching. She hurries over to where we're standing, and I notice how her face turns pale when she sees that I'm here.
"W- what the hell are you doing here?" She questions me.
I force a smile on my face. "I- I came to see you..."
"Let her in," She tells Seth.
He then takes his hand away from where he was blocking me from entering, allowing me to walk into their home.
I take a look around, and I'm insanely brought back to my childhood, to how things used to be when I lived here. Nothing much has changed. The same stench of alcohol and weed hits my nose as I walk into the room. The floor is covered in food and clothes, and loud music is blaring.
She takes a moment to examine my body, and I can tell that she can't believe what she's seeing.
"Am I seeing things, or did someone get you knocked up?" She chuckles.
I lower my head in shame. "I didn't just get fat, no."
"Who the fuck knocked you up, huh?!"
"It's a long story," I tell her. "I don't want to talk about it right now."
"Whatever." She rolls her eyes at me.
I then hear wailing coming from across the room, and I turn my head to try to find the source of the noise. I notice a young girl sitting on the couch, tears streaming down her face as she points over to the TV.
"Oh, what the fuck is wrong now, Maddie?!" My mom shouts at her.
"Mom, the show is scary!" She covers her eyes.
My mom rushes over to her, and I feel disgusted when she hurls the remote at her face, shouting, "Well fucking turn it off then! There's plenty of other shows on there!"
She then returns to our conversation, and I ask her about the little girl. "Who's that?"
Causally, she reveals, "Oh, it's your sister."
