The air was warm, the sun just beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the Outer Banks. You and Rafe were cruising down the quiet road on his motorbike, the hum of the engine the only sound between you, save for your laughter and the occasional teasing shout as Rafe swerved playfully in and out of the curves.
You had always loved these moments, where it felt like the world was just you two. The wind in your hair, the smell of the saltwater, the feeling of freedom. It was exhilarating, and you wouldn't trade it for anything.
"Hold on tight," Rafe grinned, squeezing your hand before accelerating, the bike roaring as it picked up speed.
You laughed, tightening your grip around his waist. "I trust you," you called out over the roar of the engine, knowing you'd be fine as long as you were with him.
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed.
A car appeared from nowhere, a screeching tire, and before either of you could react, you collided with it. The world seemed to slow down in that moment. You felt the jarring impact, your body flying forward before hitting the asphalt. A sharp pain shot through your shoulder and head, and the world spun around you as you tried to regain your bearings.
Through the daze, you heard Rafe's voice, hoarse and panicked. "Y/N!" His voice cracked as he called your name.
Your vision blurred, and you barely registered the frantic way Rafe scrambled to pull himself up from the wreckage of the bike. His face was pale, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wide with fear.
"Y/N... Y/N, talk to me," Rafe's voice trembled as he knelt beside you, his hands shaking as he gently cupped your face.
You tried to blink your eyes clear, but the dizziness overwhelmed you. "Rafe..." you whispered weakly, your chest tight and breathing shallow. "Are you okay?"
His face softened with relief when he saw that you were conscious, but that didn't last long as he realized how badly you were hurt. His hands moved to your shoulder, where pain shot through your body as you winced. "No, no... don't move. Stay still, okay?" he said, his voice breaking. "I'm gonna get you help, baby. Just stay with me."
The pain was unbearable, and everything around you felt like a blur—bright lights, the sound of screeching tires, the feeling of something wet against your skin. It was too much, and you could feel the darkness creeping in, your vision fading.
"Y/N!" Rafe's voice cut through the fog, sharp and desperate. "Please, stay awake for me. Don't leave me, okay?"
You forced your eyes open again, the effort draining you. You saw him, kneeling in front of you, his eyes wide and filled with panic. His lips trembled, and you could tell he was trying to keep it together for you, but it was clear how terrified he was.
"I'm here, Rafe," you whispered, your voice faint. "I'm okay, I'm okay." You didn't believe it yourself, but you needed to calm him down. He was always the protector. The one who took care of everyone, and you knew that he was crumbling right in front of you.
"No, no you're not okay!" Rafe said, his voice shaking as he tried to keep you steady. "Help is coming, I swear, I'm not letting anything happen to you."
You blinked slowly, everything blurring together. His hands were warm on your skin, his touch grounding you in the chaos. He was there. He wasn't going anywhere.
Moments felt like hours, but finally, you heard the sound of sirens in the distance, growing closer. Rafe's face lightened for the briefest second before his eyes filled with tears. "You're gonna be okay," he repeated softly, over and over again as if trying to convince himself more than you.
The paramedics arrived quickly, pulling Rafe back to allow them to assess the situation. The sharp pain in your shoulder made it hard to focus, but you could hear Rafe's voice, demanding to be with you, to know what was going on.
"She's stable for now," the paramedic said, checking your vitals. "We need to get her to the hospital, but she's going to be okay."
Rafe breathed a sigh of relief, but his eyes never left you. He held your hand tightly, squeezing it in a way that made you feel like he was trying to anchor both of you.
---
The drive to the hospital felt like an eternity. With each bump in the road, your body seemed to protest, but you stayed awake, just for him. You couldn't bring yourself to close your eyes and leave him alone, even though everything inside you begged for rest.
At the hospital, everything was a blur of white coats, machines, and sterile smells. Rafe stayed by your side through it all, holding your hand as you were wheeled into a room, his presence a lifeline in the sea of chaos around you.
Hours later, you were finally settled in a hospital bed, your shoulder bandaged and your head still fuzzy. Rafe sat beside you, his hand never leaving yours. His eyes were red from crying, but he hadn't let go, not once.
"You're really okay?" he asked, his voice quiet and unsure, as if he was still processing everything that had happened.
You gave him a weak smile, your heart aching at the sight of him—always so strong, yet so broken in that moment. "I'm okay," you whispered, the painkillers making your words slur slightly. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."
Rafe chuckled softly, but it was laced with relief and a hint of exhaustion. He rested his forehead against yours, closing his eyes for a moment. "I thought I lost you, Y/N," he murmured, his voice rough with emotion. "I don't know what I would've done."
"You won't have to find out," you whispered back, your voice barely audible. "I'm right here. Always."
Rafe pressed a kiss to your forehead, and for the first time that night, you saw a genuine smile form on his lips, even if it was small. "I love you, Y/N. I'm not going anywhere either."
And as the pain ebbed away and sleep began to claim you, you knew, no matter how bad the accident was, you had Rafe. And that was all that mattered.
