Suddenly I could breathe again. I took in gulping breaths of it, everything spinning around me as my head pounded and ears rang. Liquid was dripping down my face and I scrubbed at it in a panic, not wanting to feel Loki's blood on me anymore. Hands grabbed at my wrists and I bucked, thrashing around to try and get free as the sheets twisted around me.

"Emily!" A voice grunted as my limbs flailed around and it took me a moment to realise the voice. "Hey, hey, shhh, you're okay, it was just a nightmare."

I froze, Loki's voice settling in my ears. I blinked rapidly through the darkness, chest heaving as I desperately looked for any sight of him. A small floating green orb suddenly appeared, providing a source of light in the dark room and illuminating his perfect features in green.

"Loki." My voice cracked and I practically launched myself at him, wrapping my arms around his neck as I buried my head into the part between his neck and shoulder.

His arms wound around my softly trembling body, pulling me closer to him as he properly sat down on the bed with crossed legs. His fingers gently traced up and down my spine as he let me sob into his neck, soothing me softly. My hands dug into his shirt, desperate to keep him close to me as I fought back the memories of the nightmare.

"I'm so sorry." He murmured, his lips gently pressed against the top of my head. "I got distracted. It was only for a moment, I swear. I should have paid more attention, I promise I will in the future, I promise."

"What do you mean?" I pulled away from his shoulder to meet his eyes in the soft green light, sniffling softly as I tried to wipe away some of my tears.

"I..." He sighed and looked away. "I've been keeping the nightmares from affecting you. It's not like I need to go searching through your head or anything. It's just more like a protection in your head that keeps your sleep dreamless."

"That's why I haven't had any nightmares since I've been sleeping in here." I slowly realised, blinking slowly as I started at the green light before my eyes flicked back to him. "Thank you Loki."

"You're not mad?" He raised an eyebrow, hesitantly reaching out to gently wipe away some of my tears.

"Why would I be?" My own eyebrows furrowed as I watched him. "You stopped me from having nightmares."

"But it involved manipulating your head." He pointed out. "I know you hate it when I do that. And I accidentally dropped it when I got distracted and caused you to suffer anyway."

"You didn't manipulate anything." I shook my head. "You just put a buffer up around my thoughts. I can't be mad if you didn't tweak or fiddle with any of my thoughts. And it was one time you slipped up, it's no big deal."

"But you were screaming." His voice was soft and I gently rested my head on his shoulder again to try and comfort him. "I could hear you from the top of the stairs."

"Was I really that loud?" I pulled back to look at him, embarrassment seeping over my cheeks though it was thankfully hidden by the faint light of the room.

"The others don't care." He shook his head, instantly knowing where my thoughts were going. "They were just worried."

"Did I wake them all up?" I asked softly.

"Thor's still snoring away." He tried to chuckle, but it was a weak attempt. "Look, it won't happen again okay? You don't have to worry about waking them up, I will make sure I keep them out next time."

"Loki, you don't have to stress that much about it." I shook my head. "It's unfortunately a natural thing for me, you shouldn't be worried or guilty or whatever when they show up, it's not your fault."

"But I can stop them." He murmured. "I can stop your pain and suffering from those horrible memories."

"And I appreciate you trying." I gently put my hand on his cheek, bringing his eyes up to meet mine again. "But don't beat yourself up when you get a little bit distracted. And that pain and suffering is a part of me that I can't get rid of, with magic or not. It's okay, really."

"I'll make sure Stark doesn't schedule any more meetings at night." He said. "I will stay the whole night with you so even if I do slip up, I'll be here anyway."

"Loki-" I sighed, trying to protest but he shook his head, his hand coming to rest on my cheek too.

"It's the least I can do darling." He murmured, tracing the line of my cheekbone. "I'll try to not worry about it too much just for you, but I promise I'll be here with you each night when you want me to be, okay?"

"Okay." I smiled softly, sniffling a little.

"Do you reckon you can get back to sleep now?" He asked, eyes darting over my face.

"I'll try." I nodded, moving in closer to him and resting my head gently against his shoulder again.

He wrapped his arms around meand carefully uncrossed his legs from underneath me, gently laying us both down.I pulled up the sheets and he carefully swept away some of my hair beforepressing a gentle kiss to my forehead again. I smiled softly, wiping my eyesonce more before I buried my head into his chest and closed them.
