EMILY POV
Every time I became aware of my surroundings, I felt myself slowly getting stronger. My stomach didn't hurt as much anymore and I felt like I was able to breathe a little easier. Darkness continued to surround everything, but sometimes, I began to feel like there was movement, almost like it was clearing in some parts.
LOKI POV
As I called out into the darkness in Emily's head for at least the fifth time that day, I felt something stir. I immediately bolted upright in my chair, all previous exhaustion gone, startling my big oaf of a brother, who fell out of his own chair which was placed way too close to mine.
"What?" He asked, scrambling off the floor. "What's wrong? Is it Emily?"
I ignored him, diving back into Emily's mind and calling through the darkness again. As before, I felt something stir in the distance and I called out louder, just before a ripple of what seemed like confusion moved through her thoughts.
"Emily." I called out, hope bubbling up in me. "Emily, its me, Loki."
"Loki." Came a response, barely louder than a breath of wind, but it was still there.
"Emily!" I breathed out in relief. "You're alive."
"Why wouldn't I be?" Confusion rippled through her mind again.
I hesitated, knowing that it wasn't probably best to remind her of everything that had led up to her being like this. Instead, I took a deep breath and focused on her whispery thoughts.
"Can you wake up?" I called out into the darkness.
"I am awake." She replied, her thoughts slowly getting weaker.
"No Emily, wait!" I called out desperately but her thoughts had receded back into the darkness.
"Loki!" A loud voice broke through my concentration.
I severed the connection with Emily and be jerked back into a reality, only to find myself half falling out of my chair. A pair of strong hands were gripping my shoulders tightly and I quickly sat up, hit with a sudden wave of lightheadedness, blinking rapidly to try and clear it.
"Gods brother." A voice spoke through the faint ringing in my ears. "You're exhausted."
"I'm fine." I snapped as I recognised the voice to be Thor's, pulling out of his grip.
"How long have you been trying to reach her mind?" Another voice spoke up and I sharply looked over my shoulder to see Wanda standing there, her face full of unwanted concern.
"I finally spoke to her." I couldn't be mad at her, or Thor, not with the hope that was bubbling inside my chest. "She spoke back as well."
"What did she say?" Thor's face lit up with identical excitement as Wanda's.
"She doesn't seem to remember what happened." I replied, my happiness dampened for a moment. "And she thinks she is awake."
"Did you tell her what happened?" Wanda looked worried again and I shook my head.
"I didn't want to cause her to recede further back into the darkness." I sighed heavily, running a hand through my hair, which had fallen over my face at some point.
"At least we know she is still alive in there." Thor slapped my back and I winced softly, but I couldn't deny that he was right and I nodded slowly, my eyes drifting back to Emily.
EMILY POV:
I desperately wanted to wake up. I could hear voice speaking all around me, sometimes there were multiple, sometimes there was only one. It was a male voice, my brain too muddled up to realise what he was saying, but I knew I recognised the voice. Sometimes, the man's name would pop into my mind, and then I would forget about it just as quickly.
Occasionally, the man's voice would be in my head, it was the only way I could actually communicate with someone, since it seemed impossible for me to open my eyes and drag myself out of the darkness. It was exhausting through, and we could only talk for a couple of minutes before I faded away.
"Emily." The man's voice came to me, his tone sounding different to normal. "I have an idea, it will help you wake up, I hope."
I immediately started paying attention to the small bobbing green light in the darkness, the presence of the man as he spoke to me.
"It might be a little... hard." The man continued. "But I believe it will work."
"Just do it." I replied, desperate to get out of the darkness.
"Brace yourself." He murmured and a couple of seconds later, memories completely flooded my mind. At first, they passed by too quickly for me to actually see what they were, but their sounds began to fill my head. There was screaming and gunshots and explosions and words being yelled. I felt my heart rate pick up as the memories slowed down a little and I finally got to see what they were. HYDRA. The Avengers. Being brainwashed. The Winter Soldier. Strucker. Zola. Safak. Death. Blood. Suffering.
A strangled scream escaped my mouth and my eyes suddenly flew open, my whole body thrashing around as I tried to get the memories out of my head. Pain flared in my stomach and I screamed again, this time from the physical pain, as hands grappled to hold me. I thrashed around desperately, needing to get free of the hands, I wouldn't let them touch me. They couldn't hurt me again.
"Emily!" A voice called out through the ringing in my ears as I kicked and punched at the hands holding me down. I felt like I was about to be sick from all of the memories, which had since disappeared, and the horrific stabbing pain in my stomach. It felt like I was dying, but I wasn't going to let my death be under the hands of someone else. I thrashed around desperately, screaming and crying, my feet and fists hitting flesh and bone.
"Hold her down!" A voice yelled and I felt more hands grabbing my arms and legs, pinning me down.
"Banner!" A different voice yelled. "Get a sedative."
No. No. No. No sedatives. They weren't going to drug me. I wouldn't let them. They weren't going to hurt me. They couldn't take advantage of me. I wouldn't let them.
Something cold pricked the side of my neck as I let out a bloodcurdling scream as I someone pushed the needle into my neck. I tried to wrench my arms out of the unfamiliar grips, but I felt everything beginning to become heavy and slow. Tears streamed down my face as I desperately tried to fight back, but it was becoming useless and I slowly lost all control of my body.
"Please." My voice was a choked sound as it escaped my chapped lips. "Please don't."
"Emily, its okay." A voice spoke next to me, right in my ear as a hand moved my hair from my face. "It's okay, no one is going to hurt you. You're safe."
I recognised the voice, but I couldn't quite place who it belonged too as my thrashing lessened a little, but I refused to let the hands stay on me and I strained against them. There were a couple more words murmured, which I couldn't hear properly, before slowly the hands let go of me and I slumped back into the pillow and bed under me.
"Open your eyes." The same voice spoke up again. "Just take deep breaths."
I obeyed the voice and slowly breathed, shakily at first before I managed to open up my eyes to a world of blurriness, my breathing beginning to even out. Something dabbed at my blurry eyes and I immediately flinched away from it, another pair of hands grabbing my shoulder to keep me steady, and it was only then that I realized I was sitting up.
"It's okay." A different voice spoke up, female this time. "I'm just wiping away your tears."
I turned my head slowly to the direction of the voice as the fabric dabbed at my eyes again and saw Pepper sitting there, her face full of worry.
"Pepper?" My voice was croaky.
"Emily." She whispered before wrapping me in a big hug.
