ADAPTATION IS THE key to survival. it was proven by using nature, if an animal couldn't adapt to a new ecosystem, then it would simply die. adapting is growing to be able to survive in new conditions. being able to survive even when your normal environment has changed, when your day to day no longer resembles anything it once had.

like an animal in a new ecosystem, colette had adapted to the new lifestyle she lived. she had to adapt to the dead that walked, adapt to the fact that people died everyday now, she learned to stop getting close. loosing karen had officially proved to her that growing close to people would only result in a broken heart.

it would always end in a shattered mirror. her head lulled back, her eyes in slits as she stared at the ceiling. her chest rose and fell with deep heavy breaths, every one of her muscles were tight, contorting in pain. a few people had cleared the dead out, taken their bodies behind the blocks and burned them.

sweat covered her skin in a thin layer, her hands clenching around the mattress she laid on. boots thudded against the ground, he turned over the iv in his hands, looking at it like it was a foreign object, but to lee it was. he'd never used an iv, and he wasn't exactly sure he could properly use it on colette. he plopped into the chair beside the withering girl, her eyes glanced to the boy. "don't even think about it." she mumbled, slightly shaking her head at the boy.

she intended for her words to come out more stern, yet her voice faltered as she spoke, god she sounded pathetic. she was sure she did. lee pursed his lips before looking up to the girl, "you're dehydrated, your throwing everything up. hershel told me how to do it." lee told, his hand gently grasping the girls wrist, which she was quick to weakly tug away. a voice burned up her throat, "stop being stubborn." he grumbled, hand pulling her wrist back towards him.

"are you sure you know what your doing?" she rasped, her eyes barley open, head lulled to the side. he glanced up to the barley awake girl. he hummed in response, gently using a alcohol wipe to clean at her arm, making sure where he would put the iv was clean. she didn't respond, simply listening to what he was doing, keeping her eyes open proved to be more difficult then not.

"okay, ready?" he questioned, lightly shaking his hands to get the nerves to go away. she barley nodded her head, she let out a small hiss as he pushed the needle into her forearm. a grimace on her face, he tapped the needle down, grinning as he lifted to bag of liquid up. keeping it steady so the iv could easily push the medicine into the girls body. "first try." he grinned, proud of himself. his eyes glanced to colette's face, the grimace had left her face.

she barley nodded at his words, more exhausted then she'd ever felt. her eyes remained gently shut, lashes laying gently atop her cheeks. the soft skin dotted in the crimson color, lee gently grasped the cloth from the end of her bed, the one he'd dropped there when he'd walked in. he gently dabbed at her skin, ridding the specks of blood from her pale skin. she grumbled incoherent words, lips barley parting as she spoke.
