THE SECURITY OF THE group was one of the most important things. they'd been running all winter, in search of a safe place. someplace lori could safely give birth, have the baby without walkers crawling all over them at the sound of the child's wails. a place they could rest their heads, with the confidence they didn't have to sleep with two eyes open, perhaps only one. it wasn't a want, it was a need. a craving that could only be fulfilled with being truly safe. natalia felt like it had been years since the last time she'd truly felt safe, when it reality it had only been around eight months. and in those eight months she'd lost more people then she cared to admit, and it had taken a toll on her. it didn't matter what was happening, she now had a never ending fear that someone was going to die. she could barley look away from her brother, he seemingly was in her sights twenty four seven. she didn't trust the world, and she didn't trust that nothing would happen. he'd tried to convince his sister he would be fine. yet it didn't matter to her, she knew it would only take a second and then he'd be gone. she wasn't sure what she'd do if he was taken from her.
the prison felt like a dream, one where they didn't have to jump up at the slightest noise, it was something they'd longed for. they could only hope that the prison would fulfill those dreams. provide the safety they all deeply longed for, give them a place to rest, get their bearings, allow lori to have her baby without the risk of the dead swarming them.it was draining, both physically and mentally. it felt like they were trying to run from what ultimately take them, trying to survive another day. one wrong decision, one second and it could all be over, it scared natalia to no end. thinking about it all, how if she wasn't carful, she'd be gone. her family would lose her, and she'd simply be a memory that would slowly fade away. her voice would become a distant memory, slowly becoming harder and harder to remember, she hated it.
it could happen to any of them, her mother, father, brother, unborn sibling, they could be gone in a blink of an eye. safety wasn't always a promise, no matter how safe they believed the prison was, natalia couldn't shake the feeling it wasn't truly safe.
her eyes stared through the chain linked fence. watching as the dead limped towards them, growls and groans escaping their lips. she could feel his burning glances, she wanted him to stop looking at her. she didn't want his prying eyes on her. it wasn't clear why they had a fall out, it wasn't clear to anyone but them, only the two of them knew why they had a fall out. it shocked nearly everyone when they hadn't spoken, when they couldn't hear the two laughing over a joke one of them had made, or their hushed whispers when they believed everyone else was asleep. it wasn't clear why they'd stopped being friends, it shocked lori and rick the most, they'd watched the two grow up together, barley being able to be apart for two days. it had taken a toll on both of them, neither of the two teens truly were themselves anymore.
