“You should make up your mind, you know?”
Whether or not I’d be at the bonfire wasn't necessarily the first conversation I wanted to have with Mary, but it was probably important. She’d be the best one to talk to that would actually help me make up my mind.
“Yeah. I do,”I sighed, taking a bite of my breakfast.
“Have you?”
“No.”
“It’s tonight.”
“I know that. It's just . . . complicated. Me and drugs don't mix. The smell, the slurred voices, all of it. And if I give in and drink some, then what? What’ll I be like?”
“You’d find out after I make sure you get home.”
“I don't want someone to drag me home though. I would drag people home, and I hated it,”I promised.
“You were probably doing it out of necessity. I would do it out of love. And you don't have to. You know that. You're a very intelligent-”
“Mary-”
“Very bright girl who’s smarter than she gives herself credit for.”
“I’m really not-”
“A very bright girl who’s smarter than she gives herself credit for,”She repeated.
“Okay, okay. I get it. I just-this isn't an easy thing for me. Last time I was at a bonfire, I got made fun of. I don't need that again,”I said, mumbling towards the end.
“You don't have to go, and there will be more. But how badly can this one really go? Would you rather stay in and listen to everyone out there have fun or give it a shot?”
“I don't wanna find out.”
“You’ve got a decent friend group. I’m sure you won't have to be by yourself.”
“It seems like you're just trying to convince me to go,”I grumbled.
“No. I’m trying to convince you not to live a life controlled by fear. You can either die with regrets and what if's or some embarrassing moments and what if’s. Whichever one that will be is your decision.”
She’s . . . wise. Very, very wise.
And she may have a point. Just a little one.
