Chapter Thirty Four: The trial

Tanjiro had finally woken up. The boy had been unconscious for two and a half months!. Kanao dropped the bowl that she was holding and ran to Tanjiro's bed.

"Tanjiro are you alright you have been in a coma for two and a half months.....every one Tanjiro is awake!" shouted Kanao and everyone in the Butterfly Mansion came to see Tanjiro. Nezuko was crying tears of joy as she held her brother.

"Nezuko please don't cry.....your big brother is here and he will never let you go" said Tanjiro hugging Nezuko, he was so relieved to finally be back.

Kanao immediately called Shinobu, she gave Tanjiro a very thorough check-up and once she was sure that Tanjiro was healthy, she unfortunately had to tell him the bad news, that he and Nezuko will be put on trial by the Corps to determine their fate. "and when will it happen?" asked Tanjiro, Shinobu said that they will determine the date later. The teenager was worried, he was still dealing with the shock that his father is the UPPERMOON One and that he is part demon, and they already want to put him in and his sister on trial!. And given the Corps disgust for demons, there was a very real possibility that he and Nezuko would be given the death penalty!. He hoped and prayed that he and Nezuko will come out of this alive!.

"Come on Nezuko let's train outside, it will help take our minds off things at least for a little while" said Tanjiro and the two did just that. They grabbed a pair of wooden bamboo training swords and hid out to the garden for a good sparing session, it was their way of relieving stress and bonding with each other. Once they have completed their training for today, Tanjiro finally asked Nezuko the question that has been bothering him for a long time. "Nezuko there is something important that i have to ask you......something very important that has been eating me up inside for so long........what happened the night our family died?" Tanjiro asked, he had to know the truth. Nezuko told him everything........told him how Muzan broke into their home when they were asleep that night and how their father bravely fought to try and save them, by the end Tanjiro and Nezuko were both crying and comforting each other. "I love you dad" said Tanjiro, their father had sacrificed himself and fought with all his strength to try and save their family, so his love for his family was sincere it was not a lie. When evening arrived a Kasugai Crow came to inform the Tsugikuni siblings that their trial will take place tomorrow.

The Next Day

The day of trial had arrived, Tanjiro, Nezuko, all the Hashira and the Oyakata Kagaya Ubuyashiki were all gathered in the mansion's garden. Tanjiro and Nezuko were exhausted and fatigued, they couldn't sleep last night due to the stress and anxiety of their upcoming trial, the weather that day was beautiful, it was bright and sunny, but the atmosphere in the garden was an other thing. The tension was high, especially with Sanemi and Obanai, they could see the hatred in their eyes, those two will not rest until the siblings were dead and inside the grave!.

"Thank you all for coming we are gathered here today to decide the fate Tsugikuni Tanjiro and Tsugikuni Nezuko" spoke Kagaya in his calm voice. Kagaya's presence was reassuring for the Tsugikuni siblings, they had a deep love and respect for the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps and he had such a calming aura and presence, they were sure that he will listen to their side of the story and give them a fair chance.

"There's no need for a trial,they are half-demon and they are the children of the Uppermoon One, we can't let them live!" said the Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa, of course he was going to be the first one to speak. "And i agree with you Sanemi,we can't let them live, their too dangerous, they could be spys for Muzan and the Twelve Kizuke, and what happens if they succumb to their demonic instincs and devour someone, we can't bring back the ded, that life would be lost forever!" said the Snake Hashira Iguro Obanai, he and Sanemi were not going to let these two hybrid abominations see the light of another day!.

And then Oyakata Kagaya, let the Tsugikuni siblings speak and explain their situation.

"These young Demon Slayers have saved my life and the lives of all the passengers on the Mugen Train, they went out of their way to protect everyone on the train, they didn't let anyone get harmd and if it weren't for them i might not be here!" said the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. Kyojuro would have agreed with Sanemi and Obanai but after the Mugen Train mission and seeing the true characters of Tanjiro and Nezuko, and seeing the lengths that they went to save everyone on the train, they did not deserve to be put to death. Mitsuri Kanroji the love Hashira also took the siblings side, Kyojuro had told her everything that happened on the Mugen Train and she was so touched by his story, while Shinobu, Tengen and Gyomei weren't still unsure. This was like nothing they had ever seen before, it was so hard for them to decide, they had never dealt with a Cambion before and had no idea if they were a threat or not?. The Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito on the other hand was completely apathetic and didn't care at all.

Oyakata Kagaya had decided that the fairest thing to due would be to put Tanjiro and Nezuko under probation, since the Tsugikuni siblings haven't harmed anyone and no one can prove that they will harm anyone in the future. This outraged Sanemi, who asked Kagaya if he will allow him to preform a test. "Forgive me for what i'm about to do,i will show you the ugliness of demons!" said Sanemi as he cut himself with his blade, shedding his own Marechi Blood. Sanemi then began taunting the siblings trying to provoke them into attacking him, after all Marechi Blood was irresistible to the vile disgusting monsters!. Tanjiro and Nezuko were completely confused by Sanemi's actions.......what was the Wind Hashira trying to do?!. Nezuko used her healing flames to treat Sanemi's injury and then said, "You should take better care of yourself". Everyone specially Sanemi and Obanai were absolutely astonished, they couldn't believe their eyes!, they did not see that coming!, but they were also relieved that Tanjiro and Nezuko don't seem to have any instinc or desire to eat human flesh, so they were safe for now, and since they passed Sanemi's test Kagaya allowed Tanjiro and Nezuko to stay as members of the Demon Slayer Corps but he warned the Tsugikuni siblings that not everyone will accept them and that they must work hard to prove themselves, which was what Tanjiro and Nezuko were determined to do.......they will slaye Muzan and his Twelve Kizuke and save their father. Kagaya also urged Sanemi and Obanai not to bully the young Demon Slayers, which they reluctantly agreed

Now that the trial was over, Kyojuro invited Tanjiro and Nezuko over to his house, he explained that they might be information about the Hinokami Kagura hidden in their archives. As they were about to go with Kyojuro Sanemi came to deliver a terrifying and disturbing message, " This is not over, to me you're just like any of demon the fact that you're half-human makes no difference to me, and one day i will kill you along with the rest of your wretched kind!". Tanjiro and Nezuko were very uneased by this, it seems that they and the Wind and Snake Hashiras will not get along.
