Chapter Fifty Four: The Mu in Muichiro.

After falling out of the water pot, Muichiro began the task of removing the needles stuck in him, but he quickly felt the severe numbness caused by the needles poison. After removing them all,Muichiro was determined to continue fighting Gyokko, but he was weakened by the poison and had no strength left, and then Muichiro saw a horrible sight, Kotetsu was being attacked by a bladed fish demon, he must have saw Muichiro struggling and came to help!. Muichiro saw the demonic spawn pounce on Kotetsu and his life flashed before his eyes.

A younger Muichiro was struggling, he was carrying a heavy load of lumber but found the strength to rise up and run to his father. Before becoming the Mist Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Muichiro Tokito was a humble woodcutter, he would help his father cut down trees and enjoyed doing it, seeing the smile on his father's face as he worked. One night as a storm raged on, Muichiro's sick mother began declining, the boy told his mother not to worry, that his father will soon come home with medicinal herbs. Feeling her high fever, Muichiro changed her wet rag and put on another futon as comfort.

"I'm so...cold" muttered the woman, Muichiro hugged his mother as tight as he can and said.

"Don't worry mom, dad will be home soon". Outside in the severe weather, Muichiro's father reached a cliff face and saw the herbs.

The man struggled to reach the herbs, he stretched out his arm to take a bundle for his wife. He was about to grab some when the rock he was standing on suddenly broke, causing his to fall to his death clutching the herbs in his hand. Muichiro's mother would submit to her illness that same night. Losing both parents at the tender age of ten, Muichiro believed that he was all alone, only for him to recall that it was when he was eleven that he was alone, he in fact once had an identical twin brother named Yuichiro!. As they were walking back home from their parents graves, the older twin Yuichiro began to speak of his disdain for compassion, believing that helping others is meaningless, Muichiro hurt by his older brother's remarks, spoke up and said that helping others will help themselves as their father had said.

"You can't trust the word of a man who died trying to do something for someone else. In mother's condition, herbs weren't going to cure her. It was completely foolish. If he hadn't gone out in that storm, only mother would have died. I'm just telling the truth. The "Mu" in "Muichiro" is "Moo" like a big dumb cow. And this conversation is pointless. Nothing can change the past." said Yuichiro in response to his little brother. Muichiro was so hurt and shocked by his brother's harsh words, Yuichiro told him to be quiet as his yelling might attract a boar, he also added that the "Mu" in Muichiro's name also came from meaningless, causing his younger brother to cry.

Muichiro recalled that he would act like his older twin brother whenever he lost his memories, speaking in a blunt end harsh manner. He remembered that living with Yuichiro was stifling, and he believed that his twin was a cold individual who hated him. Two seasons later, during spring, Muichiro went to fetch water by the river. Upon telling Yuichiro, he only expressed his annoyance at him for not doing so already. At the river, as he fulled his buckets, Muichiro was happened upon by a white haired woman, Muichiro was stunned by her beauty and thought that she was forest spirit. The woman introduced herself as Amane Ubuyashiki, the wife of the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps. Amane explained that she had came to the mountains to make the Tokito twins an offer, but she was turned away by a hostile Yuichiro who forced her to leave. That night, Muichiro expressed to his twin, his excitement when Amane told them they were descendants of the swordsmen who used the first Breathing Style. Yuichiro ignored his glee and ordered him to wash the rice. Muichiro tried to tell his elder brother that they should become swordsmen after learning about demons, believing they could help people who suffer because of them.
