Chapter Fourty Four: Never give Up

After seeing Tengen's unconscious body, Tanjiro froze in shock and disbelief, Zenitsu warned him of an incoming attack and pushed him off the roof as Daki's obi ripped apart their surroundings. "I'm sorry everyone....this is all my fault!" said Tanjiro, apologizing and blaming himself for getting everyone hurt. Tanjiro landed on the ground and again apologized for his mistakes, drifting out of consciousness, Tanjiro saw himself back at his home's forest with his father before him. " Father?" said Tanjiro, his father had appeared to him in his human form. " Please stop blaming yourself for what happened, remember the Bushido code, your sister and friends still need you!." Said Michikatsu, and with his father's words of encouragement,Tanjiro reawkend and witnessed Yoshiwara district in flames!.

Seeing the devastation, Tanjiro couldn't help but ask if the people living here were fine. He turned back to look for Nezuko and saw that she was still fighting Daki. As the Maroon Demon Slayer reaffirmed that he must do what he can, Gyutaro appeared before him, Upper Rank Six began mocking Tanjiro for his luck, seeing it as the only thing he has going for him, as Daki constantly watched them from the rooftops. Gyutaro said that he pitied the Tsugikuni siblings for being the only survivors and revealed to Tanjiro his friends fates. Inosuke lied motionless in a puddle of his own blood, Zenitsu was trapped under rubble and was struggling to escape and he mocked Tengen for being weak and dying to his poison while acting proud. " So disgraceful!, So disgraceful!. You five are truly disgraceful, especially you Tanjiro, Kokushibo must be disappointed to have a weak son like you!" Said Gyutaro as he stuck his Kamas into the ground, he kneeled down to his level and said "It's my job to protect my sister especially from traitors like you" Gyutaro was excited, soon he will be known as the one who killed Kokushibo's son!.

Gyutaro scornfully pated Tanjiro's head, and said it's his job to protect her, not be protected. He grabbed Tanjiro's hand and sadistically broke two fingers. As Tanjiro reeled in pain, Gyutaro laughed at his suffering and demanded that he listen to him. The demon viciously grabbed Tanjiro by the head and repeatedly insulted him and his sister Nezuko for being the disgraceful sole survivors, for betraying their own kind and for their weakness, and while unarmed, Gyutaro goaded Tanjiro into killing him. Released from Gyutaro's holed, Tanjiro instantly healed his injuries, grabbed his Nichirin Katana and got in a fighting stance, the demon laughed......he was impressed by Tanjiro's strong spirit....Kokushibo raised him well. The fight began!. Gyutaro violently kicked Tanjiro into a burning house, but he escape before the rubble can crush him and walked back to Gyutaro, the two clashed again and the Uppermoon kicked Tanjiro in the stomach, causing Tanjiro to vomit blood!.

Gyutaro stated that despite his status as a traitor, Gyutaro did not dislike Tanjiro, for Gyutaro liked anything disgraceful,filthy and pathetic. He touched the birthmark on Tanjiro's forehead and admired its weird appearance. Gyutaro saw himself in Tanjiro so he offered Tanjiro to join their side and threatened to kill both Tanjiro and Nezuko if they refused. Daki overheard her brother and rejected the idea. Tanjiro looked into the sky and claimed he had been waiting for this moment and gave the Uppermoon Six a powerful headbutt to the face!. Gyutaro mocked Tanjiro's weak attempt to attack but was unexpectedly able to stand up, he saw to his horror that Tanjiro had simultaneously stabbed him with a wisteria-laced kunai. Gyutaro realized that Tanjiro had been leading him this whole time. Before the mission, Tengen had given them some wisteria-laced kunai for emergencies just like this, as well as some courtesan's sashes to mask the scent.

Gyutaro witnessed Tanjiro about to strike....the Uppermoon Six cursed Tanjiro for not giving up. As he used Hinokami Kagura once more, Tanjiro's blade ignited with fire, and he brought his sword down on Gyutaro's neck. Tanjiro then heard what he initially believed was Nezuko calling out to him, only to realize it was actually Daki calling for Gyutaro. Tanjiro  envisioned himself in Gyutaro's place and wondered what could have been if he and Nezuko had surrendered to their demonic instincs and fully became demons. Imagining themselves as demons, Tanjiro hoped that someone in the Demon Slayer Corps would have the mercy to kill them. Fighting the pain, the Upper Rank attempted to grab his Kama and pull the Kunai out while the Demon Slayer's blade began to cut into his neck. Daki saw her brother in danger and sends obi to kill Tanjiro. At that moment Zenitsu pulled himself out of the rubble and destroyed the obi. Seeing him again, she angrirly sent the obi to kill him instead. Zenitsu dodged them and prepared to attack while Daki mentioned how she can  now keep up with the speed of  his  attack, having seen it so many times.

Instead Zenitsu used Thunder Breathing First Form: Thunder Clap and Flash, Godspeed. He instantly reached Daki and caught Daki's neck with his blade. Too stunned to react to his new speed, Daki heard the obi in her neck getting ripped by the blade. Gyutaro pulled out the kunai and recovered instantly, seeping his blood to remove the sword from his neck. Tanjiro fended them off but was viciously attacked by Gyutaro. The two raced across the district, with Tanjiro forced on the defensive. As they clash, Gyutaro quickly broke down the poison and fully recovered. Tanjiro realized that his enemy was speeding up. Tanjiro forced himself not to give up, the demon stabed him in the eye, which he instantly healed and regenerated, Tengen then appeared. Tanjiro was shocked and happy to see the Hashira alive, he realized that Tengen had forced his heart to stop, temporarily stopping the poison's circulation. Tengen declared to a stunned Tanjiro that he can now use his Musical Score Technique and that they will win.

Gyutaro sent a giant wave of blood blades to kill Tengen, but the Sound Hashira used his unique form of transparent world that relyed on his enhanced hearing to see the attack and predict his opponent's moves, skillfully destroying the flying blades with his Sound Breathing, this was the fruit of their training. Tengen reached the Upper Rank and used First Form: Roar, slamming both of his swords into the ground and narrowly missing him, Gyutaro realized that he turned his Rotating Circular Slashes into a song he can deflect. The two clashed head-on in a giant explosion and continued to attack each other, hurling themselves across the burning city while doing so. Eventually they hit a stand still and trade incessant violent blows to hit the other one, speeding up while doing so and attacking so viciously that the city became engulfed in explosions and blood blades. Seeing his friend in danger had triggered something inside Tanjiro.

He had an odd vision......it was a childhood memory, it was winter and father was chopping wood for the hearth, and that was when he saw his dad do something amazing!. "Moon Breathing First Form: Dark Moon Evening Palace " Michikatsu said as he cut down the dead tree to use as fire wood, and then he generated some cracent moon blades to cut down the tree. "WoW dad is that what Moon Breathing can do!!!...will i be able to do that someday?!" said Tanjiro, the little kid was absolutely breath-taken by what he saw, Michikatsu on the other hand was shocked......he was not supposed to see that!, Tanjuro and Hinata were the only ones in the family that knew he was a demon, the kids were not supposed to know not until they were old enough to handle that information!. " Yeas my son, one day you when you are big and strong, you will also be able to use the crescent moon blades and i shall be there to teach you" replied Michikatsu, since he already saw it their was no point to try and lie to him, Michikatsu valued honesty...he never lied to others and especially not his family and children, however he ordered Tanjiro not to tell anyone what he saw today, that it was their little secret. Tanjiro then began transforming into his demonic form, that flashback gave Tanjiro an idea, he was going to take a risk and try something he had never done before, "Get out of the way!" yelled Tanjiro as he unleashed the Sixth form of MoonBreathing, Prepetual Night Lonely Moon-Incessant but this time he was able to generate a wave of cresent moons, and that amazed Tanjiro, normally Demon Slayers are not able to harness the element of their breathing technique, but Tanjiro was no ordinary Demon Slayer!.
