Elsa sobbed to herself as her feet carried her through the hall, feeling the tears roll down her cheeks knowing what she was about to do was already breaking her heart. She had been gone for a couple of hours, conducting secret blood tests that she didn't want anyone to know about. The results were devastating she learned something that she couldn't bring herself to tell Jack without breaking his heart. Her hand trembled as she reached for the handle of Jack's room and, taking a deep breath, she entered.
Jack glanced up from his phone, immediately sensing that something was wrong. Elsa's glassy eyes and tear-streaked cheeks told him she had been crying. Concern etched on his face; he stood up from the bed. "Elsa, what's wrong? Where have you been?" he asked softly.
Elsa took another deep breath, trying to steady herself. "Jack, we need to talk," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She could see the worry deepen in his eyes as he gestured for her to sit down next to him.
"I'm sorry, Jack," she began, her voice trembling. "I just... I can't do this anymore."
Jack's eyes widened in shock and confusion. "What do you mean, Elsa? Can't do what? Talk to me, please." He got up from the bed his feet carrying themselves as fast as they could towards his girlfriend.
Tears streamed down her face as she forced herself to continue. "I've been thinking a lot, and I've realized that... we're not right for each other. I need some time to find myself, to figure things out on my own," she lied, the words cutting her like a knife.
Jack reached out, trying to take her hand, but she pulled away. "But Elsa, where's this coming from? Please talk to me we can figure this out together."
Her heart shattered at his words, but she knew she couldn't turn back now. "Jack, I'm sorry...."
Jack's face crumpled with hurt and confusion. "Why, Elsa? Why are you doing this?" the tears of his own started to fall down his cheeks while his heart ached of sadness.
She couldn't bring herself to tell him the truth, to reveal the pain of knowing what she knew Instead, she stood up, her legs shaky beneath her. "Please don't make this any harder than it already is, Jack," she whispered, walking out of the room before he could see her completely break down.
As the door closed behind her, Elsa felt the weight of her secret bear down on her even more, but she knew she had done what she thought was right, even if it tore her apart inside. She continued down the hallway making her way to her own room which felt like nightmare being trapped alone in the room where this all started.... Once she was inside and had closed the door behind her she felt her legs drop to the ground, her arms hugging her legs tightly as she sobbed loudly while her cries filled the darkened room....
Elsa woke up the morning after breaking up with Jack, alone in her bed staring at the ceiling. She tossed and turned under the covers as the first rays of the sun began to creep into the room, casting long shadows on the walls. Her heart ached with the weight of her decision, knowing how much she loves him each beat reminding her of the pain she had caused him. It didn't help that the space beside her felt emptier than ever before, how she wished she could run to him with arms wide open, but the truth was she had done what she had for a reason.
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the memories of the previous night, but they played relentlessly in her mind: Jack's pleading eyes, his tear-streaked face, the desperate hurt in his voice. She had thought it would feel like a relief, like a burden lifted off her shoulders, but instead, it felt like the world had caved in around her.
The new day was beginning, but she couldn't bring herself to face what awaited outside her room. The thought of seeing Jack, of enduring the sadness in his eyes, was more than she could bear. Elsa buried her face in her pillow, stifling the sobs that threatened to escape. She had done what she thought was right, but it felt like she had shattered her own heart in the process.
