Christina
I paced the living room of Logan's penthouse. It had been more than an hour and Logan had not returned. I had no idea where he had taken Aiden and what he was going to tell him.
The wicked glint in his eyes had made my stomach churn. Logan's intentions were malicious; he was hell-bent on having revenge and I had no doubt he would go to any lengths to achieve it.
The elevator opened with a dinging sound and I rushed toward it. Aiden stepped out of it holding Logan's hand and with a broad grin on his face.
"Mom," he cheered, noticing me, and ran towards me.
I lifted him in my arms and pressed him to my chest, hugging him tightly, "I missed you," I couldn't help saying.
Though it was only a little more than an hour that he was with Logan but I had been on the edge all the time. One could never trust someone whose judgment was clouded by his hate.
"Logan and I had the best burger in town. It was so juicy, and then Logan bought me ice cream on the way back home," Aiden narrated his outing with Logan.
I glared at Logan who was holding a take-out shopper in his hand with a creased forehead.
Was everything alright?
My heart thudded against my ribcage. I knew this expression very well. Something was bothering Logan and I wondered what it could be. Had Aiden said something to him? But I couldn't think of anything that Aiden knew and could tell Logan.
"We got a burger for you," Aiden said in an excited voice.
"You did?" I brushed back the hair that had fallen on his forehead.
Aiden nodded happily then turned to Logan, "Let her eat the burger then she would know that it's the best one."
Logan took a step toward us and handed me the shopper. I thanked him and was about to head towards the kitchen when he leaned and whispered into my ear, "We need to talk."
I felt like someone knocked out the air from my lungs. What did he want to talk about?
Logan didn't stop and headed straight toward his study. I placed the shopper on the kitchen counter and then took Aiden upstairs to our bedroom. After putting him to bed, I came downstairs and gulped down the burger forcefully with a can of coke.
If I have to live with Logan, I would need every bit of my strength. Every single day with him was a new battle and it was draining me of my energy.
After finishing the burger I headed toward Logan's study. When I entered after knocking I found him leaning over his desk, examining a design.
"You wanted to talk?" I asked as I walked to his desk.
Logan looked up from the design and gave me an assessing look, "I did, but something came up. Richard sent me this design, it looks good on paper but I don't think practically it will be appropriate."
I glanced at the sheet on the desk with a first-floor plan. It was for the project our company had collaborated with Logan's consultancy.
Logan rubbed his forehead, "We need to present this tomorrow at the meeting to the clients. I will need to rectify this by morning, we can talk later," Logan continued.
"If you don't mind, I can help you with this," I offered him help, extending an olive branch.
I knew how passionate he was regarding his work and seeing him bothered about the design had dissipated my anger towards him. If only I could stay unaffected by him, my life would be so much easier.
This was pathetic. Logan was hell-bent on hurting me and I couldn't even see him worried about a design, which was none of my business. After Logan had chosen me as his assistant I was not involved in the project directly. Whatever involvement I had in the project was through Logan.
It had bothered me in the start that I couldn't work on such a prestigious project directly but I had learned a lot of things working for Logan, which otherwise I couldn't have imagined learning in my job. Logan had a very unique way of handling everything. He was organized to the extent of OCD.
"You don't have a license, Christina," Logan's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
"I am still a graduate in Architecture and I know my basics well," I replied in a hurt tone.
It was stupid of me to offer help to a pompous moron as Logan. I should have let him fret over the design and should have gone to bed.
Logan stared at me for a while, then shrugged, "If you insist, but I am warning you. I won't be lenient with you."
"When have you ever been lenient with me, Logan?" A humorless laugh escaped from me.
He chose to stay silent in reply and we started going over the design. Logan discussed the points that were bothering him and we both sat down to come up with a solution for it. After hours of discussion and innumerable cups of coffee, we finally succeeded in rectifying the design.
It was almost dawn and I wanted to get a couple of hours of sleep before work. I stood up from the couch and was about to leave when Logan's voice halted my step.
"Good job today, Christina," Logan praised.
This was the first time he had acknowledged my hard work since he came back into my life. I stared at him stunned, not sure if I heard him correctly. It was unlike Logan to dish out compliments easily. Since he started working on this project with our company he has made innumerable people cry.
Logan was a perfectionist when it came to work. He would go to any extent to attain perfection in everything. Even if it meant making the lives of his employees a hell. He made everyone work a hundred times harder than before. I had heard so many of the architects and engineers from our company cursing Jonathan for teaming with Logan on this project.
I woke up after two hours and got ready for work. Logan introduced me to his housekeeper Wanda before he went to his bedroom to get ready.
Wanda prepared breakfast for the three of us while I woke Aiden up and got him dressed. Bertha arrived at seven in the morning as promised. Aiden, who was having breakfast beside me at the dining table, looked happy to see her.
I was about to leave when Logan strolled into the living room where I was giving Bertha instructions regarding Aiden's daily schedule.
"Be a good boy and behave yourself. I will bring ice cream for you if you promise to behave," I spread my palm in front of Aiden.
"I will behave," he agreed immediately.
I said goodbye to both of them when Logan called out from behind, "Leaving somewhere?"
My eyes widened in alarm. Why was he asking me if I was leaving? Didn't he know I had to go to work?
"To work," I replied, narrowing my eyes at him.
"You will be driving with me," Logan instructed and I panicked.
If I showed up at work with Logan it would only confirm the rumors that I was sleeping with him.
"I will take a cab," I twisted the belt of my handbag around my finger.
Logan's eyes burned with anger at my refusal to go with him. I ignored him and headed to the elevator. I stepped inside it and sighed in relief but it was short-lived. Logan blocked the doors from closing by placing his foot between them. My breath hitched as he entered the elevator and took a threatening step toward me.
