The pediatrician examined Aiden, who was asleep on my bed and then turned to me.

"How long did you say he was having the fever?" He inquired in his professional tone.

"Since the afternoon," I replied.

I looked up a pediatrician on the internet when Aiden's fever didn't subside, even after I gave him anti pyretic syrup.

"Does the child have any health complications?"

"Not that I am aware of," I answered.

"Isn't your wife around? She might know better about the boy's condition," he commented.

"She isn't in the picture," I gave a cryptic reply.

The pediatrician then examined Aiden's chest again with the stethoscope. I got anxious about the doctor's behavior. Why did he ask so many questions instead of telling me what was wrong with my son?

"I don't understand the reason for his fever. There aren't any visible signs of infection, and I can't specify the reason for his fever without conducting further tests," the doctor said thoughtfully.

"Then what could be the reason for him having such a high fever suddenly?" I couldn't help asking.

"It could be anything. He might have contracted some virus, or it could be because of mental stress. Did something happen that was out of the ordinary, which might have affected the child's mental health?"

I fell silent in response. There had been a voice nagging me at the back of my head that Aiden's condition was because of the separation from Christina.  He was never away from her since birth, and fhen, he suddenly had to live without Christina. Aiden couldn't cope with the separation, and it affected his health.

"Is there something that I need to know, Mr. De La Roche," he gauged there was something wrong with my silence.

"Aiden got separated from his mother recently," I said with my voice heavy from my inner guilt.

I hadn't taken him away from Christina. I had even fired Bertha, with whom Aiden was attached. If my son wasn't well, it was because of me, and the thought was drowning me in guilt.

"Ohh, I see," the doctor commented.

"Do you think it could be the reason?"

The doctor stayed silent for a few moments. Probably trying to choose words to express himself. My anxiousness only increased with his silence. What if he confirmed my doubt?

What was I supposed to do?

"Children are very sensitive, Mr. De La Roche. You mentioned your son is a genius, which means he will feel everything more intensely compared to other kids his age until he learns to control his emotions," the doctor expressed.

"Can you come to the bottom line, doctor?"

"I think you should reunite your son with his mother," he asserted.

My hands fisted on my sides of their own accord, and I fought hard not to lash out at the doctor. He was only doing his job. The problem was he didn't know my history with Christina or how she betrayed and deceived me.

"It's not good for a young child to be away from his mother. The experience could prove to be traumatic for his young mind," the doctor continued, listing the reasons why I should reunite Aiden with his mother.

"Thank you, doctor, for your time. I will consider your suggestions," I interrupted, shutting him up.

The doctor looked displeased at the interruption but chose to stay silent. He prescribed some medicines and left. I asked the driver to get the medication from the pharmacy and then went to the kitchen.

Wanda was ready to leave after she finished preparing dinner. I asked her to prepare some soup for Aiden and then returned to the bedroom.

Aiden drifted in and out of sleep, but he was weak from the fever and didn't protest when I fed him. I gave him the medicines after feeding him the soup and then lay down beside him on the bed.

I wasn't hungry, and all I could think was if I made a mistake by keeping Aiden away from Christina. There was no doubt that I hated her and didn't want her anywhere near Aiden. But I also didn't want my son to suffer because of his mother's mistakes.

I drifted into sleep thinking about Christina and was awakened by Aiden's scream. He was having a nightmare again. I sat up with a jerk and pulled Aiden onto my lap.

"Mom, I want Mom," Aiden murmured in a dizzy voice.

I felt like someone crushed my heart in their palm. Aiden kept sobbing with his face buried in my chest and only one word on his lips.

"Mom."

It was enough to drown me in guilt. I needed to end the madness once and for all. Aiden needed Christina even if I didn't want her in his life. I needed to tolerate her presence in my son's life for Aiden's sake. Or we might risk losing Aiden.

Aiden fell asleep in my arms after crying for a long time, and I stayed awake for the whole night thinking about how to ask Christina to come back. I knew she wouldn't hesitate even for a second to come to my penthouse for Aiden if I asked her. The problem was my bruised ego, which wasn't letting me call her.

I needed to drink the bitter poison for Aiden after working out in the gym for an hour and convincing myself that I had no choice left but to call Christina. I finally picked up my cell and dialed her number.

It kept ringing, but Christina didn't pick up the call. When I was fed up and was about to disconnect the call, she finally received it.

"Logan, is everything okay? Did something happen to Aiden?" Her sleepy voice, filled with panic, sounded on the other side.

"Can you come over to my penthouse?" I asked.

"Now?"

"Yes," I replied.

"I will be there in a few minutes," she agreed without hesitation and then inquired, "Is Aiden okay?"

"Just come as soon as possible," I said and disconnected the call.

I didn't have to wait for long. Christina arrived within half an hour. Mark called me to inquire if I wanted him to allow Christina inside. I told him to let her in and then disengaged the lock on the elevator.

The elevator door opened after a couple of minutes in the foyer, and Christina stepped out of it.  She hurried to me in the living room with concern dripping from her face.

"Where is he?"

"He is asleep in my bedroom," I answered, and she rushed to my bedroom without wasting a second.

I didn't follow her and slumped on a couch in the living room out of exhaustion. It felt like a heavyweight had lifted from my body. I shouldn't have separated Aiden from Christina. No matter what she and her father did to me.

In my thirst for vengeance, I hurt my son and left him heartbroken. My guilt was only increasing with each passing second.

"What did you do to my son?" Christina's voice pulled me out of the slumber I was about to fall in.
