Christina

I felt like someone pulled the ground from below my feet. I saw Mom only yesterday. After Logan had left the park with Aiden, I went straight to Mom because I couldn't bear to go back to an empty apartment. She looked well enough, then what happened suddenly?

"I will be there in an hour," I replied to her and disconnected the call with shaky hands.

"What happened?" Logan inquired, noticing my distress.

I opened my mouth to speak, but only a sob came out. Logan pulled Aiden into his arms.

"Don't touch me," Aiden protested but went silent, noticing my tears.

He settled Aiden on a barstool, then turned to me, "What is it, Christina?"

"Mom," I tried to say but only managed to push a single word out of my mouth.

"What happened to her?" Logan questioned, confused.

I stared at Logan with my eyes crowding with tears and blurring my view of him. Logan took a step toward me and held me by my shoulder. His eyes assessed my features while his face dripped with concern.

I buried my face in his chest with a jerk and let loose, "Mom suffered a heart attack."

Logan stiffened at my words, then his arms circled me, and he pressed me close to him, "Shh, everything is going to be alright," he murmured gently.

"I don't want to lose Mom. She is all I have," I admitted my worst fear to him.

Even thinking about my life without Mom was enough to stop my breath. She might not be living in the same house as me, but the thought that she was alive and breathing was enough to keep me going. Mom was my strength, my rock, and the thought of losing her made my heart bleed.

"You aren't alone, Christina. You have Aiden and me," Logan's words made me freeze in his hold.

I tilted my head upward slowly and stared at him, who watched me with distress in his eyes. I couldn't believe what I saw in his eyes at that moment. Logan De La Roche was not only comforting me, but he even looked unsettled at my pain.

"Mom," Aiden's eyes broke the trance we were caught in.

Logan pulled away from me, and his deep brown orbs returned to their usual cold state. I felt like something broke inside me. Why couldn't Logan look past his hate for once?

"What happened?" Aiden inquired in an anxious voice.

He got upset seeing me break down. Aiden was a very sensitive child and could sense emotions much deeper than kids his age.

"Gran," I struggled to say, "she isn't well."

"Will she be okay?" He asked in a concerned tone.

I only shook my head, not sure what to say, when I was struggling to keep a hold over myself.

"Gran is going to be alright," Logan picked Aiden up into his arms and assured him, Why don't you finish your breakfast so we can visit her?"

Aiden was so affected by my crying that he didn't even notice Logan holding him in his arms.

"Can I come with you?" He asked me.

"Sure," I nodded.

"Get dressed. We should leave soon," Logan instructed me, then began feeding Aiden.

It took more than an hour for us to reach the hospice center. The nurse guided us to Mom's room.

"She is under the effects of the drugs currently. You can see her from outside the room," the nurse notified.

"Any idea when she might wake up?" I asked her.

"We can't say for sure; it depends on her condition. She was lucky the cardiologist was present at the time she got the heart attack and was treated immediately. As you know, her disease has weakened her very much. This attack could have proved fatal if the doctor wouldn't have acted immediately," the senior nurse gave a detailed explanation.

"Has her condition stabilized?" Logan inquired.

"She is still in a critical condition. The doctors gave twenty-four hours. If she doesn't gain consciousness by then, she might slip into a coma," she replied.

I placed my palms on the door and peeked through the small glass window inside Mom's room. Her unconscious, fragile frame laid on the bed with innumerable tubes inserted into her body.

Tears pricked the corner of my eyes and began trickling down my cheeks. How much more would she suffer? Why didn't God bestow his mercy upon her and let her live her last remaining days in peace?

Mom went through the loss of her love and her daughter, which made her lonely and sad. She never got over her first love and moved on in life. She suffered all her life, and right then, she was suffering because of her health.

Why didn't God end her misery?

"I want to meet, Gran," Aiden's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

I turned to him, who was in Logan's arms and tried to look inside the room over my shoulder.

"Gran isn't awake," I replied, wiping my tears with the back of my hand.

"I want to talk to her," he insisted.

"Why don't we get you ice cream and visit Gran once she awakens?" Logan tried to divert him.

"Why can't we see her now?"

"The doctor won't allow us because Gran is ill," I answered.

"Gran is always sick. When will she get well?"

"If you promise to behave, she will get well soon," I replied.

We left hospice care after speaking with the doctor. Logan stopped near an ice cream truck on the way to his penthouse. I waited in the car as he and Aiden bought ice cream for us.

"For you," Logan handed me a cone with my favorite chocolate chip ice cream.

He remembered.

It was a pleasant surprise that Logan didn't only remember my favorite ice cream but he bought one for me. Aiden got his favorite strawberry ice cream while Logan bought himself butterscotch.

"She will be alright," Logan assured, noticing my silence.

"I only wish she got to live some better days in her life," I said in a sad voice.

Mom's life had been full of hardships even before she married Dad. After marriage, it only worsened.

"Life isn't a bed of roses Christina. We all have to go through our share of hardships," Logan replied wiping ice cream from around Aiden's mouth with a tissue.

I was grateful that he accompanied me to visit Mom and comforted me when I needed someone. I couldn't understand if he did it out of guilt for how he hurt Aiden or if it was something else, but I was thankful nonetheless.

"I want one more ice cream," Aiden demanded after finishing his ice cream.

Logan bought him another cone and then dropped us at the front of his building.

"Ask Bertha to come back to work," he said before leaving.

I stared at him astonished. Never expecting that he would want to call back Bertha after how he fired her yesterday. Mighy be Aiden's unwillingness to trust Logan affected him more than I expected.

"I need you at the office," he continued, noticing my silence, "Bertha can look after Aiden when you are at work," he clarified in an uneasy tone.

I nodded at him and then slipped out of his car. Logan had to leave because of an important meeting at the office. I carried Aiden inside the building and into the elevator.

"Look, who we have here, the infamous Williams whore," Talia's mocking voice greeted us the moment we stepped out of the elevator.

I felt like someone knocked all the air out of my lungs as I stared at Talia in shock. Logan had told me she would be staying at a hotel. Then what was she doing there?
