After the events of BFDIA 16, Book and Pencil find themselves alone, still simmering with frustration over Needle's blunder that cost Freesmart the challenge. As the tension settles into silence, Pencil starts to wonder just how deep Book's loyalty to her runs—and decides to put it to the test. What begins as a curious, tentative kiss quickly spirals into something more... until they're interrupted.
Nickel, having witnessed the entire moment, sees an opportunity and isn't about to let it slip by. With a smug grin and a threat hanging in the air, he makes it clear: unless they give him exactly what he wants, their little secret won't stay secret for long.

Pencil and Book had been flattened—crushed beneath the weight of the Freesmart Supervan, all thanks to Pin. And, well... somewhat thanks to Needle too. Playing on two teams at once? What was she thinking? Her recklessness got them out, plain and simple. If Pencil and Book weren't, you know, dead, they'd be furious about it. Luckily for her, Needle recovered them shortly after, mumbling apologies with her head down, nervously rubbing at her wrist.
Now the three of them stood awkwardly in the dim blue glow of moonlight. Pencil had her hands planted firmly on her hips; Book had her arms crossed tightly, eyebrows drawn in a silent scowl. The disappointment was obvious.
"I... I'm sorry," Needle started, her voice wavering. "I didn't mean to mess things up—I was just trying to help—"
"You helped us right out of the game!" Pencil snapped, cutting her off. "Do you even care that you betrayed us? That we lost because of you?"
Needle flinched, eyes flicking down to the ground. She wanted to explain herself—wanted to say that, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't that big of a deal. Nickel won, after all. Wasn't that... fine? Everyone practically lost! There was no way to win with Nickel's powers or whatever... but none of that would matter to Pencil and Book. Not tonight.
Pencil let out a sharp breath. "I think we need some space from you."
That stung Needle more than anything else could've.
"At least for tonight," Pencil added with a huff, turning on her heel. She didn't like feeling this way. She'd started to like having Needle around. But this wasn't something she could just brush off—Needle needed to learn. Freesmart could not survive betrayals like this.
"Come on, Book," she called, and without another word, Book silently followed, casting one last look at Needle, who stood alone in the night, her eyes downcast and mouth tight with regret.
The walk was quiet and neither Pencil nor Book said a word for a long while. Pencil led them away from the chaos, determined to find somewhere—anywhere—they could rest for the night. Eventually, they found a quiet patch near a large bush, and Pencil plopped down, stretching her legs out with a sigh. Book settled beside her, fidgeting with her fingers.
"...Hey, Pencil?" Book spoke up softly. "Are you... worried? About getting eliminated?"
Pencil raised an eyebrow and glanced over her shoulder. "Uhh, well... I guess?" She blinked like it was a stupid question, but deep down, it unsettled her. The idea of leaving the game before it was over—it gnawed at her pride.
Book sat with her knees drawn to her chest. "I was just thinking... what would I do if you were gone?"
Pencil frowned. "What's with you tonight? You're talking like I'm already eliminated or something."
"I'm not! I just—" Book hesitated, eyes cast down. "I just don't want to lose you too..."
Pencil didn't answer right away. Instead, she leaned back on one hand and looked up at the stars.
