Season 4 had just begun, and Candle was back in the competition, while Silver decided to sit this one out. He missed her more than he expected, his crush on her hadn't faded one bit. Watching her compete stirred up all those feelings again, and he found himself wanting to finally ask her out one night after the competition. Unsure how to go about it, he started seeking advice from others who were in relationships but not competing this season, hoping to get some insight on what to do. After gathering the courage, and a few tips, Silver finally worked up the nerve to ask Candle out on a date.

Season 4 had started up again, and Candle was back to competing full-time. Silver, on the other hand, had decided to sit this one out, or as he put it, take a "mental health break." Truthfully, it wasn't entirely unjustified. The whole Mephone 4 'creating them' incident had shaken everyone, but Silver insisted his trauma was "far more severe" than anyone else's. In reality, it seemed more like a convenient excuse to avoid doing much of anything.

Without Candle around, his days felt emptier than ever. She'd always been his grounding light, calm, centred, and endlessly patient with his dramatics. Without her, he felt... lost. He didn't really have many other friends either. He'd started hanging around Paintbrush occasionally, mostly out of mutual boredom. After Season 3, the two had a sort of friendship, though it was more Paintbrush tolerating Silver's antics than anything else. Still, with Fan and Test Tube busy hosting and Lightbulb competing, Paintbrush didn't have many options either.

When they weren't chatting with Silver, Paintbrush spent most of their time working on the safety team, which, to Silver, was both impressive and annoying. He found the whole concept of "safety duties" dreadfully dull.

Most days, Silver just wandered the area or sat around, waiting for Candle to finish her challenges. He told himself it was meditative, "watching over her from afar, protecting her energy" but to everyone else, it was the work of what some might call a hopeless simp.

This afternoon was no different. Silver was wandering aimlessly outside, hands tucked behind his back, sighing dramatically every few steps. The air smelled faintly of wet grass and competition, a mixture of sweat, effort, and the faint hum of tension in the distance. He spotted Candle across the field, mid-challenge, focused and determined.

He froze. She looked radiant. The sunlight hit her just right. Silver stood there, entranced, his cheeks lightly tinted grey with blush. He crossed his arms tightly, pretending he wasn't staring but his eyes didn't move from her.

"She's doing some kind of... race?" he muttered to himself. "Whatever it is, she's magnificent."

He sighed wistfully. "Oh, Candle... if only I could tell you how I—"

"Hey! Whatcha lookin' at?"

Silver jolted. Paintbrush had jogged up beside him, still in their safety vest, clipboard tucked under one arm.

"Nothing!!" Silver blurted out immediately, spinning around, face burning.

"Right," Paintbrush said dryly, raising an eyebrow. They followed Silver's gaze, it didn't take long to spot Candle across the field. "Still hung up on her, huh?"

Silver scoffed, arms crossing tighter. "What?! Don't be absurd! I'm completely over her! I don't need her anyway!"

"Uh-huh." Paintbrush smirked. "Sure you are. That's why you've been staring at her for the last five minutes."

Silver's mouth opened, then closed again, a nervous frown forming. "...I was not staring! I was... observing! Out of concern! She could trip at any moment, Paintbrush!"
