When Fan finds himself with no one to hang out with, he turns to the web for some entertainment, searching for fanfiction tagged with his name. He's seen countless ships before, many involving him and Test Tube (which makes sense to him), but today he stumbles upon something entirely new: 'Knifan.' Being the curious and slightly obsessive fan that he is, he can't resist checking it out. What he discovers leaves him stunned.
Believing he's alone, he delves into the story, only to be interrupted by an unexpected visitor—none other than his dear friend, Knife.

Fan and Paintbrush were working together on a project—a strange coding task they had both taken an interest in. They had settled on Fan's bed, eyes focused on his computer. At first, Paintbrush was deeply engaged, but now they seemed distant, constantly checking their phone. Fan didn't mind; he was always checking his own. But today, Paintbrush seemed rushed and impatient, like they had somewhere else to be. They kept glancing at the time, sending messages, and growing more restless by the minute.
Paintbrush had already mentioned at least five times that they needed to leave soon, but Fan kept coming up with excuses to make them stay. He was unusually needy today, and Paintbrush was beginning to get frustrated. It was already 3 p.m., and despite not wanting to leave Fan alone, they had promised someone else they'd hang out, delaying it an hour just so Fan wouldn't be lonely.
"Look, Fan, this has been really fun, but I've got to go now. Lightbulb is waiting for me," Paintbrush said, slipping off the bed.
Fan's eyes widened, pleading.
"What? You can't go! We barely started!" he protested.
"Fan, we've been doing this for three hours! Can't you hang out with Test Tube?" Paintbrush replied, trying not to sound harsh, though their exhaustion was showing.
"But she's busy! I can't always be hanging around her, y'know! She'll get sick of me eventually!" Fan dramatically flopped back onto the bed, whining.
Paintbrush winced, feeling awkward as they slowly backed toward the door.
"Yeah... well, I'm heading out now," they said quickly, opening the door and rushing out. Finally.
Fan grumbled as Paintbrush left, lying on his back and staring at the ceiling for a moment before sitting up again. He grabbed his laptop and shifted back into a comfortable position, closing the program they'd been working on and deciding to browse the web instead. Whenever Fan gets bored, he has a habit of searching his name online or exploring fanfiction sites to see what the Inanimate Insanity fans are shipping him with. The most common one is 'Fantube,' pairing him with Test Tube, and it's his favourite. He's read a few fanfics of it and enjoyed them. Other popular ships include him with Lightbulb or Paintbrush, and, naturally, he's read those too.
No one really knows about Fan's odd obsession with reading fanfiction about himself and his friends. He reads a lot of them and enjoys them more than he'd like to admit. Is it weird to read fanfics where he and his friends are shipped together? Maybe... but he justifies it as research—just gathering insights on what the fans think about him. It's all for research, nothing more.
There was that one time Test Tube caught him reading one, and of course, it had to be a Fantube fic. She called him a weirdo, but she didn't seem upset. It made sense, given that Test Tube was his girlfriend. Still, it would be a little strange to see your boyfriend reading fanfiction about you, but she's used to this sort of thing from Fan.
If Fan were reading a fanfic about one of their other friends, Test Tube wouldn't be too upset. Their relationship dynamic within the Bright Lights was a bit unconventional. While Fan and Test Tube were dating, and Lightbulb and Paintbrush were a couple, their connections often blurred the lines. Sometimes they all kissed and hugged, making it feel like they were all in a relationship—or at least in a platonic one. Still, Fan's heart and love always belonged to Test Tube, even if they occasionally had some 'fun' with the other Bright Lights. The same was true for Test Tube; no matter what, Fan would always be her everything.
