The next morning, Mama and Asabe finished getting ready and headed to Attajiri's villa. Thirty minutes later, they arrived and stopped at the large ornate gate. Finding the gatekeeper absent, Mama pushed the gate open and led the way in, with Asabe following closely behind.
As soon as they reached Yasim's part, Mama's booming voice filled the air. "Amra, I've come for what you owe me," she thundered. "You have five minutes to come out and pay. If you don't, I'll make sure everyone knows the truth about you and your stupid mother." Her eyes flashed with anger, her gaze piercing.
Asabe chimed in, her voice was venomous: "You deceitful fools, come out here now!" She shouted.
Mama added, "We'll leave only after I get my money. Do you get that?" She waited for a response, but none came.
A low, menacing laughter escaped her lips. Without a second thought she turned and headed towards Amira's part, Asabe trailing behind her.
Mama's knock on the door echoed through the silence, and a few moments later, the door creaked open, and the house maid's timid face peeked out, her eyes widening as she took in Mama's intimidating figure and Asabe's stern expression.
Mama's brow furrowed in a deep frown as she inquired, "Is your Hajiya here?" The housemaid nodded silently. " Inform her that Tasleem's mother is here," Mama instructed. With another nod, the maid closed the door, leaving Mama and Asabe lingering in the morning air.
Within the warm confines of the house, the family gathered around the dining table. The maid approached Mamie, her voice barely above a whisper. "You have visitors, ma'am." Mamie's gaze lifted, her eyes narrowing slightly before she nodded. "Show them in," she instructed. The maid curtsied slightly and made her way to the door, swinging it open to admit Mama and Asabe into the house.
As they entered the living room, Mama sank into the plush sofa, while Asabe, looking awestruck and intimidated by the space, dropped to the carpet, her wide eyes fixed on the grand chandelier.
The housemaid headed to the kitchen and returned with drinks and snacks, which she placed before Mama.
Mama quickly pulled out a black leather pouch from her bag and packed almost half the snacks into it. Next, she grabbed a bottle of orange drink and tucked it into her bag.
She took another bottle of juice, unscrewed it, and took a sip. Her gaze drifted to Asabe, who was lost in thought. She nudged her gently. "Asabe, drink the juice," she said.
Asabe picked up a bottle of drink but didn't open it, her gaze drifting to the massive television.
Mama smiled at Asabe's behaviour and said, "Make yourself at home, Asabe. My daughter is married to the only son in this house, so this is our home too."
Asabe nodded and began to eat the snack. Mama turned to the housemaid and frowned. She pointed at the television and commanded, "Hey, you, turn it on for me."
The audacity!
She's barely here for two minutes and already she's acting like she owns the house, bossing me around like I'm her personal servant.
The housemaid shot her a dirty look and said, "I'll need Madam's permission first." She doesn't trust them at all. They gave her a negative feeling.
Mama's face reddened with rage as she leapt from the sofa, her voice thundering at the housemaid. "I'm giving you orders, and you dare tell me you need Madam's permission?" The words barely escaped her lips before Mamie, Abba and Amira strode into the living room.
Mamie and Abba exchanged shocked glances as they saw Mama. Mamie's gaze was sharp "What are you doing here?" She asked. The atmosphere in the living room was heavy and serious. "Didn't I tell you not to come here again?" Mamie asked, her tone firm.
