Just an fyi this isn't my new otp for them. I went through a faze of shipping them when I thought of this. But even when I stopped fully shipping them (I still think they would be cute) I didn't want to throw all the work away. So here it is

Gary cursed under his breath when he noticed the time. It was 11:23p.m. and he told Serena that he would be home at a reasonable hour this time. Yet, the clock shown otherwise, mocking him with how late he was. Again.

Without a second though, he quickly gathered his things and headed for home. A small part of him hoped that the quicker he went, time would somehow turn back. Unfortunately, he lacked the time travel abilities of a Celebi and was stuck with the late hour. Which only made the drive feel much longer than usual.

When he finally pulled up to the house, he saw all the lights were off.

Gary can't help but feel so guilty. How long had she been waiting for him before finally giving up? He didn't want to think about it, but the question repeated on loop in his head.

Nonetheless, he went inside. As quietly as he could, he entered the house. He half expected her to still be waiting in the dark by one of the lights, ready to turn it on when he finally showed up. Like a parent ready to catch their child sneaking in after curfew.

Much to his relief and sadness, she wasn't there. He checked the kitchen next. She wasn't there either, but he found a note, telling him that dinner was in the microwave. Which he did have a few bites off before putting the rest in the fridge.

He checked a few more rooms in the house, his heart dropping while his guilt rose at her absence.

Finally, he found her in their bedroom, fast asleep on her side of their bed. He stared at her for a moment, tempted to brush some hair out of her face, but decided against it. He didn't deserve to and he didn't want to wake her up. Who knows how long she stayed up waiting for him. Again.

With a sigh, he stepped away and got ready for bed himself, being extra careful to not make too much noise.

Once he was set he went to his side of the bed. As quietly and carefully as possible, he slipped in next to her. The second he sat down, Serena rolled over and put her arms around him. He froze, hoping she was only sleeping and he didn't wake her. He wasn't so lucky.

"You're home." Serena muttered sleepily.

"Yeah....were you awake this whole time?" Gary worried.

"I dosed a bit." Serena admitted.

She sat up and stretched before nuzzling up against him. She opened her mouth to say something, but Gary beat her to it. He had to apologize.

"I'm so sorry. I-"

"It's fine. I'm just glad you're home." Serena smiled at him.

She leaned on his shoulder and wrapped her arms around him in a welcoming hug.

Gary just stared down at her in shock. She wasn't mad at him for being late again, but she should be. She should be furious and be lecturing him for an hour at least. Instead she looked so content, as if all was well in her little world.

"But it isn't. I told you that I would be home earlier and I should have been home. I just got so caught up in work and I-"

"Hey, don't talk like that." Serena interrupted him.
