Nico woke groggily, the sun that shone through the crack of the curtains somehow trained perfectly on his face. He groaned and flipped onto his belly, wrapping his arms around the pillow. It smelled like Will. Nico reached his hand out and groped the other side of the bed, but the sheets were cold. He frowned, smushing his face further into the pillow and scrunching a fist loosely in the empty spot. He inhaled again and signed, relaxing into the scent of his boyfriend.
After a moment, when he took another deep breath, and turned his head to the side to breathe better, his nose picked up another smell. It was faintly sweet, but bitter like it was burned. He scrunched his nose and cracked open his eyes.
The room had a golden glow to it, the sun reflecting off of surfaces and brightening up the room. Then Nico inhaled again and grumbled as he swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He really should check out why it smelled like that at, he glanced over at the alarm clock and furrowed his brows, nine o'clock in the morning. That was way too early to do anything other than cuddling with his boyfriend in their bed.
But his boyfriend wasn't with him like he should be, no, his boyfriend was probably setting their kitchen on fire.
Nico threw on an oversized shirt that hung limply off one shoulder, and threw on a pair of sweat pants that sat low on his hips, then made his way out of their room and to the source of the burning.
When he walked past the threshold of the kitchen he paused and rubbed his eyes, cracking a fairly silent yawn. There he was, his boyfriend, in rainbow shark boxer briefs and an Adventure Time t-shirt, along with a floral apron wrapped around his waist to tie the whole look together. His hips were swaying gently as he stood over the stove, humming a jaunty tune.
Nico smiled at the sight of him, then spotted the fully brewed coffee in the pot on the island, two mugs right next to it. He padded into the kitchen, he didn't think Will knew he was there yet, so he silently poured himself some coffee and brought the delicious brew to his lips. He sighed when the first sip slipped down his throat and settled warmly in his stomach.
After about five sips, just the right amount he needed before he could deal with whatever mess Will had done, he placed his mug down with intentional noise to alert Will of his presence.
"Morning," Nico said as he walked up behind Will, a hand in between his shoulder blades as he looked over his shoulder to see what was cooking.
"Nooo," Will exclaimed, blocking his view and swiftly turning around, backing Nico up so he couldn't see. "Don't look yet, I wanted it to be a surprise," he pouted, his bottom lip puffed out and Nico really couldn't get over how adorable it was.
Nico chuckled and leaned up to kiss Will's pout away before pulling back. "A surprise?" Nico raised a brow and Will nodded. "Well, you might want to work on your subtlety, I could smell it burning from our room," he wrapped his arms around Will's neck and swayed a little. Will's hands rested on his hips.
Will's face flushed and Nico reached to cup his cheek and run a thumb along his freckles. "Sorry," he mumbled. "I just wanted to make a delicious breakfast for my beautiful boyfriend and the love of my life," he squeezed Nico closer.
"Love of your life, eh?" he said lowly, brushing his lips past Will's ear, Will nodded. Nico got a glimpse of the stove. Frankly, it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. It looked like Will was making pancakes but most of the ones that were done were pretty dark. Nico's eyes caught on the ones that were actively burning on the stove. "Will, your pancakes are burning," he said, pulling back.
Will frantically went back to the stove, flipping them and cursing as he almost burned himself. Gods, Nico loved him.
"Not again," Will groaned, putting the burned pancakes with the others.
Nico placed a hand on Will's back, running it down his spine then brushing his fingers under the hem of his shirt. "It's okay, my love," Nico soothed. "You're trying and learning, you know?"
Will huffed. "Yeah, but I wanted them to be perfect," he glanced at Nico, eyes softening. "For you," he said, then turned back to the stove. "But who knew pancakes were so ding dang hard to make!" he let the spatula fall to the counter with a dull thud and flicked off the stove.
Nico pressed a kiss to his shoulder. "Oh, honey," he sighed. "Here, why don't we make 'em together, hm? It'll be fun,"
Will turned to him. "But I wanted to make something special for you,"
"I know," Nico said, then turned to clean up some trash from around the stove and tidy up the space. There was still plenty of batter to make more. "But this way, we can do it together, it'll be fun," he carefully cleaned out the burned bits in the skillet, then placed it back on the heat.
"Okay," Will agreed, his shoulders slumping a little.
Nico went back over to him and wrapped his arms around his waist, bringing him in and kissing his chin. "Don't give me that," he scolded lightly, his kisses trailed up Will's jaw. "If I teach you now, then maybe you can try again another time, how does that sound?"
Will made a little whine in the back of his throat when Nico kissed the sensitive area of his pulse, feeling it throb under his lips. "Sounds good," Will answered breathlessly.
Nico pulled away and kissed his cheek. "Perfect," then he moved away entirely and turned back to the stove. "Now come one then, let's get started,"
Will grinned at him and then they got to work.
Nico didn't think Will was really learning anything. Nico stood at the stove, going batch by batch of pancakes, while Will stood behind him, arms locked around his middle and nose buried in his neck. His breaths tickled.
"Will, are you paying attention?" Nico asked lightly, reaching up to tug at his hair gently.
Will gave a nod, but didn't move from where he was.
Nico signed fondly and ruffled his hair. "If you look, you can tell when they're ready to be flipped when the bubbles pop and leave little holes," he pointed to show and dragged Will's head up by his hair.
Will whimpered pathetically and Nico's heart pounded with love. Will snuggled back into his neck.
And really, how was Nico supposed to be annoyed, let alone upset, at that. That was Will, his Will. His Will that was soft and loving and so very caring. His Will who went through the turmoil of trying to make breakfast for him, to surprise him.
He loved Will with so much of himself that sometimes it was overwhelming. Like right now, with Will's weight blanketing him as he cooks, just his presence calming enough for Will to drift into a faint nap. It was perfect and Nico would never change it for the world.
He turned his head and kissed Will's curls, soft beneath his lips. Will responded with kisses to his neck and yep, Nico will never want anything more.
