The party gracefully came to an end. By the time it had finished I was exhausted. I laid my head against Capitano as the carriage slowly moved down the street.
"You did well," Capitano commented.
I glanced up at him with sleepy eyes.
Blinking away some of the sleepiness I gave him a sheepish smile.
"Thank you but its not all me... you helped a lot. They really liked you."
After Capitano had took that noble out he had become the talk of the night. People kept approaching him curious and keen to know more about who this mysterious and powerful knight was. Capitano did not speak but he did nod for yes and no. I did some talking for him and it didn't take people long to forget I was the princess and get more comfortable.
For once I had finally felt included. They were treating me like a normal human being. It didn't matter that I had no magic or what my title was, they weren't interested in any of that in those moments.
It really gave me hope for the future. Talking with people had not been as bad as I was expecting it to be.
"It appears that is the case," Capitano answered.
"They really did," I laughed a little, "I'm so relieved at how smoothly things went. Their was a lot of nice and polite people."
He hummed in response agreeing with me.
If all the noble celebrations were like this, I think I could handle attending some more of them in the future. Plus it would be a great opportunity to further any friendships I had made today.
"She invited me back," I mentioned to Capitano.
I could feel his eyes on me.
"She asked me to come for tea sometime." I remarked.
The host was a very kind lady and I was glad to have been able to meet her. Her and Yae seemed to be close as well so she had probably heard a lot about me from her. That would explain why she was much more relaxed around me than some of the others. It didn't take the two of us long to get comfortable and before I knew it I was chatting away with her.
Today had really been a huge success. I couldn't wait to tell Uncle and Thoma all about it. I'm sure they'd be very pleased.
I glanced up at Capitano for a moment.
Him being around had definitely helped.
There were little butterflies in my stomach as I gazed up at him.
He had defended me against those men today too... He didn't have to do any of that. He could have just left it as I asked and pretended like it was nothing. That was the life of a royal after all, someone would always disagree.
But instead, Capitano challenged him and defeated him at that.
I knew it was probably just his sense of duty and justice, but... my heart sped up regardless.
"Also, thank you." I said my eyes switching focus to the carriage window.
"For?" Capitano questioned.
I was silent for a moment watching the streets pass by. My heart was still racing and my stomach still full of nerves but I spoke anyway.
"For standing up for me," I smiled to myself.
Capitano let out a sigh and then something warm brushed against the top of my head.
"If I cannot stand up for my princess, then the title of knight is not mine to bear."
My smile grew and I closed my eyes leaning closer into him. The phrase 'my princess' had caused the butterflies in my stomach to grow.
I already knew the thing patting the top of my head was his hand. The glove brushed through my hair in a soothing motion.
My beating heart calmed at his touch and I tried to focus on the movements of his hand.
The motions were relaxing and the exhaustion from earlier settled on my body.
With my eyes shut the rest of the ride became a sleepy blur.
I felt when the carriage stopped and something gently wrapped around my body. It was warm to the touch and instantly lulled me back to sleep. I didn't feel the need to try and be cautious, the warmth was enough to know I was safe.
I swayed back and forth, this action only caused me to become more drowsy.
There was a short click and creaking noise but neither could disturb me now. I was too far gone sitting on the precipice of dreams and reality.
Footsteps sounded coming toward me, I couldn't tell if it was real or not.
"How was it?" A low male voice asked.
There was no reply.
Yet the voice spoke again, "Good. I'm glad to hear it. I can take her off your hands if you'd— ah are you sure?"
There was silence once more.
"Well then thank you and good night."
The moving began once more. It rocked me back to sleep and small dreams began to fill my head. The events of today replayed themselves as I dreamed.
Capitano remained present within them, always by my side.
