??? POV
The crisp breeze stung my bare face; it was as calming as it was unrelenting. It had been so long since I took my helmet off... since open air has touched my face. The feeling of chills running down your body. That first breath in with that stinging air, the kind that you can feel hit every alveoli in your lungs. Seeing the sky, not through the metallic shine of an augmented visor, but with your own two eyes. And in all the beauty I couldn't help but...
hate the feeling.
I felt naked without it.
But no new missions have come in for two weeks. So, for the time being, my position had no requirement for helmets... or the rest of my gear for that matter. But getting the helmet off was bad enough, I can't bring myself to drop the rest quite yet.
I took a deep breath in, taking comfort in the feeling of the rest of my gear still being right where its supposed to be. My anxiety continued to grow like a tumor in my stomach, just like it had been for the last two weeks. I tried coming to a place of some small comfort to me. Hoping that would bring a stop to the voice in my head crying out that I need to being doing something. But in all the silence that surrounds me... it has never been louder.
No thoughts of tactical movements for supply conservation to keep my mind moving. No gunfire to drown out my thoughts with a hail of deafening sounds and tinutus. Just myself for the last two weeks.
Waiting.
Waiting.
Waiting.
So now I sit here alone, legs dangling off the edge of this floating rock, taking in the view. I've admired every inch of this land and not once in all this time has it's beauty failed to amaze me. The icecaps on the tallest mountains that glisten like a million microscopic diamonds when the moonlight hits them just right. Or the sounds of faint snowfall like slowly pouring sand in a glass.
This was my home and it is safe now. So what am I supposed to do now?
My purpose was to fight until the job was done and frankly I didn't expect to make it nearly as far as I have. I thought a couple weeks in something would happen, a lucky shot or something, and then suddenly it wouldn't be my problem anymore. But here I stand all those years later and now with no purpose.
My job is done... maybe it's time.
A sudden gust of wind threatened to push me forward. I thought, in that moment, how easy it would be to let myself fall. All I would need to do is relax and the wind would do the rest for me. I looked around at all the beauty of my home trying to take it all in. I felt heavy as if an invisible force weighed me down calling me to the floor below. My eyes threatened to close.
(Y/N): "I am so very tired."
Winter: "I know right." The sudden voice knocked me from my stupor almost causing me to lose my balance if it wasn't for the hand that grabbed my shoulder. "There are better, safer, views (Y/N). I could even show you them if you'd like." I couldn't help feel my face flush red with embarrassment about being caught here for the second time.
She sat down next to me, leaning against me slightly, before taking in a deep breath. She stared out at the same view as me though now I couldn't bring myself to look away from her. Her blue eyes glistened just like the icecaps in the moonlight. If I hadn't seen her in the flesh myself I wouldn't have believed her to be real.
(Y/N): "Hey Winter. What're you doing over here?"
Winter: "Oh I decided to come looking for my favorite specialist." My anxiety was a long forgotten memory as she turned and flashed a smile. "I needed the company after these past two weeks. You couldn't imagine the amount of paperwork that goes in the logistics of ending a war!" She rubbed her forehead before letting out a deep sigh. "But that's all said and done now. So how's the end of a war been going for you? Staying busy?" She nudged me a little bit as if giving my cue to talk.
