"Well, in that case, you can come clean with me. Why do you keep hiding things from me? First, you go to Loot without telling me...I can understand that, but then you start plotting my brother's murder behind my back?! The worst part about this is that I don't even find out about it from you, but from Makoto!". His grip on my chin tightens as the words tumble from his mouth.
The pain in his voice shatters my heart. I want to reply, I really do, but when my mouth opens to say anything, it goes dry. I want to scream to him that I do trust him, I really, really do, but I also care about Ilya. The ordinaries of this kingdom are going to suffer if Kitt isn't overthrown—my people. I won't let anyone get in the way of overthrowing Kitt and securing a better future for the ordinaries, not even Kai. His duty may be to his king, but mine is to the welfare of my people.
"Tell me, Paedyn, why...why can't you be transparent with me? You know I wouldn't have been this hurt if you had just told me from the beginning, don't you, darling?" he looks at me, his eyes searching mine for an answer, an answer that will satisfy him; he finds none.
"Kai, time and time again, you've made it clear you don't know whose side you're on. Mine or his? That's why I can't trust you, because you still love him. I can't let that get in the way of a better future for the ordinaries. You may be in love with me, but Kai, your duty is to Kitt, to your king. I don't know how long it'll be until you turn against me. Against us." I gesture towards an unconscious Makoto as the last few words leave my mouth. I can barely breathe properly with all the sand blowing into my face. I'm surprised I managed to even get that many words out.
Kai's face remains the same, but I know under the mask he's wearing, my words have stabbed him like a knife in the heart. I'm forcing him to choose; he doesn't want to. I never wanted to force him to choose in the first place, but I don't have any other choice; he can't just keep pretending and switching sides. It's not going to work any longer.
"You want me to choose between the two of you, hm?" his voice sounds calm and unfazed. I can't tell what he's feeling anymore. Was it pain, regret, or... something more sinister?
"Yes, that's exactly what I want you to do, Azer". I spit the last word out like a curse.
He sighs in annoyance, "Fine then, I choose..."
