As soon as the words escape my mouth, I notice a tear streak down his face. His Adam apple keeps bobbing up and down, I take another step closer to him, so that I can once again feel his breath on me, and my eyes briefly dart back to his lips, thinking about how they'd feel on my lips for a third time today.
Then my eyes snap back to his, I wipe the tear from his cheek, and I realize he's trying to not cry in front of me, he doesn't want to. I can't bear to see him in such a state. I lean in towards him, so my lips brush his ear as I whisper "It's okay Kai, all of us have to let our masks down, you can do that with me, I won't judge you, you can be yourself. You can be Kai, not the enforcer, not anyone you're not."
He nods acknowledging my words, but not daring to reply. More tears start pouring down his cheeks, and it takes all my will strength to not wipe them away for him. I take him into an embrace, which he returns, squeezing tightly so that I could barely breathe, while mumbling "thank you, Pae" and something else I can't quite decipher through his tears. I just nod giving him a warm smile which he returns.
I've never seen him like this before. I've never seen him this broken. I've never seen him this cracked. I've never seen him this shattered. I never even imagined it, but everyone has a breaking point I suppose, and this was his. He committed treason, lost his duty, lost his brother... but he also found another, someone like him. Makoto. Even I'm still surprised about the revelation. Kai isn't the only wielder in Ilya, there's others. Mak is just the first to show himself. I wonder how many others there are.
"We should probably go back, shouldn't we?" Kai's voice cuts me off my thoughts, he had recomposed himself within a matter of seconds, once again slipping his mask on. If only he didn't do that. I don't know why he does it. I want him without his mask. I want him. Only him.
I suppose old habits die hard.
I nod, mustering up the best smile I can give him, and then take his hand as we walk back to Makoto's house.
"I was getting worried; you both had been gone for at least an hour. I was going to check on you, but it seems you're back now. Are you two alright?" Makoto asks as we find our way inside the small house, he calls his home.
Kai still seems a little off, so I reply for both of us with a quick "Yes", then gesture for Mak to show us to where the bedrooms are. Surprisingly he understands and shows us another room.
"Uhm, unfortunately I only usually have on guest at a time here, so there's only one guest room. You two can decide whose sleeping on the floor and bed" he says awkwardly looking at the two of us, before slowly backing out of the room.
I sigh in annoyance, obviously this was happening... again.
