After dinner was concluded, Kitt had a guard escort me back to my room, I noticed that he had a knife strapped to waist. Maybe I could use that to escape from this damn palace, if I got my hands on it. My best shot at escaping this hellhole would be with a weapon rather than without one after all. So, relying on my thieving instincts, I pretend to stumble into him, he catches me and while he's distracted, I swiftly grab the knife from his waistband, without him noticing, and slip it up the sleeve of my dress.
"Watch where you're going...ordinary" he says roughly, pushing me onwards to my room. I can't help but smirk, I'd successfully managed to pickpocket and elite guard.
Once we reached my room, the guard left me alone. I sat on my bed, holding the knife tightly in my hand. It felt heavy in my hands, the weight of the lives which were taken previously with this knife weighed down on me, so did the lives which would be taken in the future. I could see my reflection in the blade of the knife, my blue eyes were the first thing I noticed, they reminded me of the forget-me-nots Kai had once given to me, long before this. The memory brought a sad smile to my face, knowing I would never be able to love him without the fear of being caught. I look tired, the kind of tired that's caused by weeks of sleep deprivation, but I don't have time to rest, not right now, and anyway I'll have plenty of time to rest when I'm dead. Right now, I need a plan to get out of here, and far, far away from here. Maybe even to Izram ?
Suddenly a plan formed in my head, it wasn't totally fool proof, but it was the best I'd come up with all week, and I'm getting desperate. The wedding is only a week from now, and no one can save me not even Kai, the only person who can save me now is me.
I changed into a pair of black pants and a black shirt, which would allow me more flexibility and camouflage than the silver dress Adena had stitched me. As soon as the clock strikes twelve, my plan went into action. I've decided my best route of escape would be through my window, no guards are blocking it, although the fall is approximately 100 meters by my count. I don't really have much of a choice, after all beggars aren't choosers, so I jumped. I jumped 100 meters, although it felt like more. Somehow, I managed to land on my feet, although not without spraining my ankle, I cursed aloud as I planted my feet on the ground.
The first phase of my plan was complete, now all I had to do was run. Run far, far away from here. I ran as fast as my injured leg would let me, which wasn't very fast. I realized just how vulnerable I was. The only thing which was protecting and hiding me was the darkness of the night. My only friend seemed to be the shadows nowadays.
But even they seem to betray me.
Two guards had spotted me, though they still seemed unaware of who I am, they started to approach me, and fast, while shouting "Show yourself, you intruder." Suddenly a knife came flying at me, I jumped to the side only just dodging the blade, but to my dismay the knife seemed to spin right around like it had a life of its own and aimed at me again.
One of these two men must be a tele, one of them can move objects with their mind.
This... felt like a suicide mission now, I realize how reckless and hopeless my plan is, but I suppose there's no turning back now.
My best chance at survival and escape isn't running, nor is it hiding. No, my best chance at escaping was acting... pretending, pretending to be something, and someone I'm not.
Putting as much fear into my voice as possible I say "Wait, I'm not an intruder, don't attack me, I'm Paedyn Gray, bride to King Azer, King of Ilya". That seemed to get their attention. Both of them froze, wary of me, they know me as the infamous 'silver savior', they even seem to be... scared. If not for my situation I could've laughed. Two elite guards afraid of a mere ordinary girl. I am nothing. They are everything. I am powerless. They are powerful. Yet I can still make them fall, make them bleed, make them wish they'd never crossed my path. While I am reckless, they are cautious. But despite the hopelessness of it all I am fearless, and they are fearful.
"I was looking out of my window, and somehow managed to fall out of it, could either of you escort me to my room?". I force as much fearfulness as possible, while cringing at the excuse I'd come up with, lying should come easier to me than this. The pathetic excuse I've made isn't enough to trick imperial guards, is it?
To my surprise, both of the guards bought my excuse, although they did give each other a skeptical look as they approached me to escort me to my room. Once they were an arms distance away from me, I attack. I attack the tele first. I grab the knife I had earlier stolen from the guard that escorted me to my room and stab it right into his throat, killing him with just a flick of my wrist.
The other guard who seems to be a blazer reacts quickly, aiming a blaze of fire at my legs. Only then do I realize I have the advantage here. The king has ordered me to not be killed. The guards are only trying to subdue me. I narrowly manage to dodge the fire, although my hand did get slightly burnt, I winced at the pain but kept going, I couldn't afford to be re-captured. Not again. Not ever. This was my ticket to freedom. My breathing had become ragged by now, as I dropped to a crouch while the burner attempted to punch me. As he recomposed himself, I tripped him up with my good leg, sending him tumbling to the ground. And within an instant, I was on top of him, straddling his chest, with a knife to his throat, and blood dripping all over my hands.
Nine. Nine people. Thats how many I'd killed. I could hardly breathe under the weight of guilt, which was crushing me, pulling me apart, destroying me. I could only imagine what my father would think of me, when he taught me to fight, he didn't have killing in mind. No. I'm disgusting. A disappointment. A mockery of everything he taught me to be. My soul will forever be stained with the blood of the people I've killed. The people who could've lived.
If I could bury the two guards, I would, but I don't have the time nor the energy to do so... not if I want to escape.
"Gray, is that you?".
The voice of another man has me spinning on my heel, my shoulders tensing and a dagger to his throat.
Kai.
When I realize it's him, my shoulders relax, all tension gone, my eyes widen at the sight of him, he's just as I remember.
The man who I'd fallen in love with, his inky black hair blew with the night breeze, his gray eyes were calm and composed as usual, and his mouth had formed that damn smirk again, the one which made his damn dimples visible. The cocky bastard! I had a knife to his throat, and he wasn't concerned in the slightest.
