"What. The. Hell"
Both of their heads turned to face mine.
Paedyn...and the enforcer.
I had heard rumors about them... but I had assumed that's all they were. Rumors. Now I realize how wrong I was. Those two were in love with each other. Oh God. The Enforcer. Someone I never ever wanted to be up close with.
I had always wondered what it would feel like to sense his powers, after all he was the only other wielder in existence other than me. Now I realize it feels like nothing, he feels exactly like Paedyn. Powerless. I'm guessing I feel the same to him as well, since he hasn't made any moves to kill me. Good. I didn't want anyone to know what I am.
I still hadn't told Paedyn about my power, I don't want to tell her, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to eventually.
"Oh... Mak, this is uhm Kai, and Kai this is Makoto" Paedyn says, her voice way too calm for my liking.
I try to muster up as much annoyance in my voice to hide the fear and say "Well, your majesty, are you going to untie us, or what?"
His eyes, go cold and icy, only for a second, before changing back to their previous expression. I didn't like him at all. Not one bit. He seemed cold and callous, like someone who would do whatever it takes to finish his job. Anything. I don't trust him, and I don't see why Paedyn trusts him either. She was making a mistake, that was the only thing I was sure of. A big mistake.
The enforcer came up behind me and with a sudden movement of his arm the binds were off my hands, I quickly got up, and stepped forward, eyeing him. He didn't seem intimidated in the least, if anything he seemed to find this amusing.
I wonder how amusing he'd find this if he knew what I am. If he knew that I was just like him. If he knew that-
"It's a pleasure to meet you... Makoto" he says and outstretches a hand in greeting.
This man was really doing formalities in this situation. How I wished to wipe that massive grin off his face... The enforcer was not only dangerous but unpredictable as well. How am I going to think one step ahead of him if I can't even predict his moves.
I hesitate, but only for a second, before firmly taking his hand and shaking it.
"Okay, so here's what we're going to do... firstly you two are going to sneak out of here, and this time you're going to travel through the scorches and to Dor, from there you can find a way to Izram." The enforcer suddenly says, as if he had been calculating this plan for weeks, while looking Paedyn dead in the eyes.
I raise an eyebrow skeptically. "I apologize for not trusting you, but how do we know you're not trying to get us killed? Or take us both back to the King?"
The enforcer looks annoyed at my reluctance to his plan, but his voice is calm as he replies "Do you think I'd let you go just to chase you down again? It's not time efficient, and secondly, I only just learnt your name today, what makes you think you're going to be of any value to the King?"
I almost laugh at his words. What makes me think I'm going to be of any value to the King? I could give quite a few answers to that.
"I'm not sure enforcer" I emphasize on the last word, to let him know I don't trust him at all; to let him know I'm not intimidated by him "But you do seem to be having an awful lot of fun, it seems you're treating this like a game of cat and mouse. Secondly, if you really want us to escape why are you helping the King, huh?"
The enforcers eyes flickered with emotion for a second, but then it disappeared. He was confusing, I couldn't tell what he was thinking, was he amused or irritated?
"I have a duty, to serve my King" still holding eye contact with me, daring me to argue with him.
And that's exactly what I do. He might not be used to people arguing back to him, but he doesn't scare me. I'm exactly the same as him, yet totally different to him. I've nothing to fear.
"If that's the case, that would mean you're willing to bring Paedyn back to the King... since it's your duty to serve him, isn't it?"
Even Paedyn had gone silent, this was likely a thought that always lingered at the back of her head, a thought she never voiced in fear of his answer not being what she wanted to hear, what would he choose in the end? Duty or desire? Paedyn might be a fool and believe that he'd choose her every time, but I know better, this is the enforcer. A ruthless man willing to kill. Hell, he might even want to kill, I don't know.
"I..."
The enforcer was at loss for words, he didn't know what to say, I hate to admit it but I'm surprised, he didn't seem like the kind of guy who didn't know what to say. But I'm even more surprised that he isn't lying... He genuinely didn't know. He wasn't acting. He wasn't pretending. He genuinely cared about Paedyn.
I don't trust the enforcer, but I think I can trust his feelings. His feelings for her. Anything that concerned Paedyn meant that I could trust him. For how much longer, I'm not sure though. Once he realizes I'm like him. Once he realizes I'm a wielder, I'll have no choice but to disappear. To run away. To go somewhere no one will ever be able to find me.
Either that or I could face execution. I could see her again. I could see Adena again. I could join her in the stars.
