"For the longest time, I hated being an omega."

Jeongguk frowns up at his hyung, confused by the sudden spill of truth. He wipes at his teary eyes, his quiet voice cracking as he speaks.

"I wish we could trade."

Hoseok gives him a pained look of understanding. He had spent a long time hating the fact that he presented as an omega and even now, still struggles with accepting his subgender. His heart aches for the young alpha. He knows exactly how he feels to want to be something he's not.

"I want to tell you that it gets easier but...it doesn't. But you don't have to go into selective gender roles. You don't have to hunt with the pack or dominate your mate to be an alpha. It shouldn't be defined by that." He explains softly, relating to him.

Jeongguk glances away. He feels exposed but he knows that Hoseok is right.

"What is an alpha supposed to be like?" He asks solemnly. It's odd asking an omega how an alpha should be, but Hoseok seems to know a lot about his situation.

The omega pulls his legs up on the couch, crossing them underneath him. "An alpha is supposed to provide safety and protection, but not in a possessive way." He starts, recalling examples of alphas in his life who he actually admires.

"Real alphas aren't given respect and trust, it's earned. They're easy to talk to, comforting to be around. They should make you feel safe to be yourself, it should feel safe to be submissive. They lead with you, not for you."

Hoseok finds himself thinking of Taehyung. How attentive and protective the alpha is. When he protected him from those bullies last year during the festival, when he held him as he cried and released comforting pheromones.

Despite being rejected by Hoseok, the alpha made sure he got home safe. He's looked out for him since, only crossing his boundaries if necessary and respecting his space.

And Jeongguk may be young, but he isn't stupid. He notices the distant look in his hyung's eyes. The look of yearning. It makes his jaw clench. He thinks back to that beta at the market, how he flaunted the fact that he wore Hoseok's sweet scent. He felt like  didn't deserve to wear it, especially if he hadn't been officially dating him.

"You know how a true alpha is supposed to act, yet you're with a beta." Jeongguk can't stop himself from saying. He doesn't mean it in an accusatory way but he can't bare the thought of an omega like Hoseok stooping so low for a...beta like that guy.

Hoseok is completely appalled by his words. He blinks rapidly, trying to collect his thoughts for a response. Jeongguk doesn't know what his actions have done, so Hoseok holds his tongue. Everything in him is telling him to curse the alpha out, tell him off and scream at him—but he holds back.

"That's completely unrelated," he dismisses, trying not to think of the fact that Jeongguk is the reason he's now single. That he no longer has the beta male in his life, partly because of him.

"It doesn't matter," Jeongguk simmers. "That beta doesn't deserve an omega like you."

Hoseok's eyes widen and he finally scoffs, "an omega like me? How do you know what I deserve, Jeongguk? When you've ruined every chance I had at having a mate?"

At his words, the young alpha pauses. His intention was not to start an argument with him, but just to understand his decision. Yet hearing his words, that Jeongguk is the reason he's doesn't have a mate, stung. He's confused and his facial expressions replicate that.
