I promised ya'll some fun facts, so here they are!
Fact 1: Oscar's love interest was an OC number child.
Yup, before this book was a thing I'd started an older ST book that was all about El having a sibling with her who had fire powers. It was a straight, OC x OC story. It was ultimately scrapped because I felt like Oscar's relationship with the OC was too similar to Mike's relationship with El and it would've been boring to read.
Fact 2: Oscar really was going to turn evil.
I wrestled with what I wanted to do with Oscar in the final season for a while, debating if I wanted him to turn evil and have the others rescue him, or if I wanted him to stay good all along. I ultimately chose to keep him good because I didn't think it would be in character for Oscar to ever betray Mike.
Fact 3: Oscar was supposed to get hunted by Vecna and saved with a song.
This idea ended up being scrapped since it was revealed music didn't really make a difference at all in season 5, plus there was just never really good time to do this. But for those curious, I'd planned on making his song Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat.
Fact 4: Theo was supposed to kiss Oscar.
I debated making Theo flat out shoot his shot with Oscar, but decided I wanted Theo to genuinely be a good guy who just happens to have a crush on him. I also debated Oscar having conflicted feelings and liking both Theo and Will, but I just didn't want to go down the love triangle path.
Fact 5: Vecna couldn't create even illusions of Mike not accepting Oscar.
When Vecna has a hold on Oscar, he shows him memories of times when Oscar didn't feel accepted by the people around him, as well as what could happen if he were to tell them all the truth. In both of these instances, Vecna was never able to show examples of Mike because Mike is the one person who Oscar could never believe wouldn't support him.
