I sat on the counter watching the cookies slowly bake in the oven. As I watched, my mind thought of far off things. One of the things being that night.

The motionless bodies of Nick, Karmen, and Gatsby lay, no sound breaking the silence. I was left in darkness, only able to hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears. It felt as if I was all that was left, I would be alone. I remember every horrifying detail in that moment. How the trees rustled softly, looking as if they were dancing in the wind. How the ground felt under my warm, clammy hands. How the three around me lay lifeless. The images replayed over and over in my mind.

The only thing bringing me out of my trance was the sudden ding of the oven. Carefully, I pulled the cookies out, laying them to cool.

I sat back on the counter and stared out the window at the slowly drifting snowflakes.

I saw Gatsby's body lay in his bed, looking as if dead. I saw Karmen's sullen face. I saw Nick standing and never moving. I saw the many maids and butlers walking like as if they were zombies, sadness emitting from them.

The sudden feeling of arms around my waist pulled me back into reality.

I smiled at the warm feeling, embracing it, letting it help me almost forget.
