Chapter 48

Harry's POV
After speaking with the girl for about 15 minutes I had found out that they don't actually live together but he doesn't let her go home, and he abuses her if he is upset about anything from that day, since she's 17 I called her parents and they came to fetch her. I then had to explain to Sam where she was and why, the police took him as soon as I'd put a cast on him.
It's been strange working here tonight but it's been like I never left, I was just sitting at a desk doing some paper work when a nurse came running in shouting that there was a trauma call on 2 minutes and that I was the only one available. I grabbed my stethoscope and ran towards the entrance grabbing some gloves along the way. Two minutes later the paramedics entered "21 year old female, hit by a car while jogging, was knocked out on arrival, gcs now 15, possible concussion, query fractured ribs and dislocated shoulder as well as query fractured wrist on the left hand side, neck and back cleared on scene, bp is 130/90, resps are 97 and pulse is 160" Ian the paramedic said as we wheeled her into a bay "thanks guys" I said after she was transferred to the bed, the paramedics got their stuff and left but before he left Ian pulled me to the side and said "be careful with this one she's scared out of her mind" I thanked him and headed over to the girl.
"Hello sweetheart my name is Doctor styles but you can call me Harry okay? Can you tell me your name?"
She shook her head violently "please I just want to go home"
"I know you do but you've got some injuries that I need to take a look at and I'll get you out of here as soon as possible" I smiled to which she lightly smiled back "so can you tell me your name?" I asked she looked unsure at first but then answered "Cara"
"Okay Cara I'm going to take care of you while your here okay? All I need you to do right now is just breathe, try and relax for me! I know your scared but I'm not going to hurt you I promise love" I said to which she nodded and started to take deep breaths "that's great, keep going and I'm going to listen to your chest, I'll be gentle but I'm going to pop my hand up your t shirt okay?" She nodded and I listened to her lungs and her heart, I couldn't hear any signs of a punctured lung which was a relief so I removed my stethoscope and placed it back around my neck, the nurse had hooked her up to the machines now so I could monitor her vitals "I'm just going to lift you too and have a look at your chest, it will be a little painful when I touch it but just try to stay calm for me I'll be nice and quick" j said and she bit her lip and held her tears in the best she could but nodded to me anyway so I went ahead, a few years escaped her eyes but she seemed to be doing okay so I carried on. "Right I can see your left shoulder is dislocated without a doubt so what I'm going to do is give you some pain relief, I'll get you some gas and air and I'll put it back in place, how does that sound?"
"Terrifying" she replied
"I know it does but it'll be over before you know it now, the worst part is that you'll here is pop back in, it is painful I won't lie to you about that but this medication will take the edge off it" o said as I put the pain relief through her iv, the nurse stood at her right side while I went around to her left "take nice steady breaths with the gas and air okay, don't breathe too fast just take it easy, relax as much as you can and try not to resist me, I understand it's hard and your scared but I need you to try" I said as I grabbed her arm ready "okay, are we ready?" I asked her
"No no please stop leave me go" she cried all of a sudden, she pushed my hands off her with her good hand and began sobbing uncontrollably
"Cara sweetheart I need you to calm down for me, can you do that?" I asked sweetly to which she shook her head no "I know you can love, just look at me, I'm not here to hurt I promise you that! I need you to trust me can you do that?" She nodded slightly "okay so copy me and just take some big breaths in and out, and again" she started to calm down and her breathing returned to normal " I know how scary this is I really do but I need to do this, you'll be in more pain if I don't I can assure you, what I want you to do is just lay your head back, close your eyes and just breathe. I'm not going to just sneak up on you and pull your arm, that's not how this is going to work." I said and she just stared at me blankly "I am going to hold your arm just like I did just now, I won't move you until you say your ready, if we have to sand here for an hour it doesn't matter to me because we will do it when you feel comfortable enough okay?"
"Thank you" she whispered as more tears left her eyes.
"I don't want you to be scared sweetheart that's not what in trying to do, one step at a time is how we will go! So start taking some nice breaths with that has a air for me and I'm just going to put my hands on your arm" she nodded as just as I said she put her head back and closed her eyes "that's great, your doing really well, I'm just going to move your arm out a little bit and put my hand a little further up is that okay?" I asked as I couldn't get the right grip from the way she was sat and because she had a splint on her wrist. She simple nodded so I repositioned my hands and was ready to go "right all I have to do now is lift your arm up on the air and your shoulder will go back in, so when ever your ready just give me a nod" I said. I watched her breathe in and out with the gas and air for a few minutes and her breathing was getting faster with each breath "slow your breathing down for me, just relax there's no rush" I said and watched as she calmed down a little and then she nodded to me "okay here we go deep breaths" I said and I pulled her arm straight up and as planned her shoulder popped straight in, I later her arm across her stomach and asked the nurse to get a sling on it for me. "Good job sweetheart you did great, now we will need an X Ray on that and your wrist so a nurse will book it and when they are ready we will get you down there but for now I just need to check you over that's all"
"Okay, may I have some water please?" She asked nervously
"Of course" I said as I handed her the water. After she was done I set it back down and grabbed my penlight "look straight ahead for me an sim going to shine my light in your eyes, it's likely that it'll be very uncomfortable if you do have concussion but I want you to try and keep looking ahead for me, it won't take me long" she nodded and so I began, I took a look and put my penlight back in my pocket "you do have a mild concussion so you probably will have a severe headache and some dizziness at times but if you feel like your getting any worse or you feel sick let us know okay?"
"Okay" she replied. I checked the monitors and all oher vitals were back to a normal level.
"The only thing we need now is an X Ray so just hang tight and give me a shout if you need me" I said before putting her chart in the end of the bed and leaving the room.
After she had her X Ray and I was sent the results I went back in to tell her, she looked worse than when I left, her face was paler and a bit sweaty and she looked like she was drained. "Hi Cara, I got your X Ray's here so your shoulder is back where it should be but you'll need to keep the sling and your wrist is broken and you'll need a cast okay?" I told her and she nodded but I wasn't happy to leave her like this so grabbed the thermometer and checked her temperature "your temperature is 38.9 so it's a little high, how are you feeling"
"Sick" was all she managed to say before she gagged and started vomiting into the sick bowl, "okay love, your okay, just breathe" I said as she continued to vomit and cough. When she was finished she laid back down and her stats started to drop and her breathing became shallow, "Cara I need you to stay calm for me now okay?" I said as I listened to her lungs 'shit' I thought as I could here the fluid on her right lung "I need a chest drain now!!" I shouted to any of the Jesse stood near. I grabbed some gloves and pulled her gown up as the nurses had recently changed her, "Cara I'm doing to insert a chest drain so first this is just local anaesthetic so just a sharp scratch" I explained as calmly as I could but I couldn't wait for a reply as her stats were still dropping so I inserted the anaesthetic as a nurse held her arm over her head, I then made a small incision "this will feel a bit strange but it's okay Cara I promise" I said as j pushed the tube into her lungs, she whimpered as the drain went in and I attached it to the collection container, "cough for me Cara" I said and she just cried and shook her head "come on Cara I need you to cough, just one big cough" she did and fluid finally came out of he drain "okay can we get the drain secured please?" I asked the nurse as I went around and listened to her chest "how does that feel now?" I asked as I put my stethoscope back
"Better" she nodded
"That's great, what happened was you strained so much when you was sick that pressure was put on your ribs which punctured you lung allowing fluid to go I there but the drain will sort it out okay?" She nodded so I said I'd be back later and left to have my break.
I checked my phone and noticed I had a missed call of Rachel so I phoned her back
R - hello?
H - what did you phone for babe?
R - I don't feel to great
H - what's wrong?
R - I don't know I feel funny
H - okay hold on I'll come and get you
R - okay
I grabbed my coat and left after I told a nurse I'd be back asap
I got home and picked Rachel up and headed back to the hospital "what going on then love?" I asked her looking at her, she didn't look all that great really so there must be something
"I don't know, I felt a bit sick after you left by I thought it would pass but I still feel it and now I feel like the world is spinning and I'm really tired and, and I just don't know haz" she started to cry
"Hey don't be upset love I'm going to find out what's up okay? I promise you that I will sort this okay?"
"Okay haz" she said just as we pulled up. I helped her out of the car and into the hospital and I got her j to a room, she was in pyjamas so I didn't bother changing her into a gown. "I've got to go check on a patient but this nurse is going to take some bloods, please be good for me?" I begged and she nodded so I ran back over to Cara to see how she was doing
"How you feeling love?" I said checking her stats
"Much better" she smiled and I noticed she had her cast on as well
"Great, do you need or want anything while I'm here?" I asked
"When can I leave?" She asked
"If all goes well you'll be out of here in a couple hours"
"Okay thanks" and with that I left and went back over to Rachel. She was sleeping on the bed when I walked in so I grabbed the thermometer and gently took her temperature which was 40.3 which was dangerously high, I grabbed medication to bring it down and put it in her IV, I then grabbed the blood pressure cuff but before I could put it on her arm she woke up, I started putting it on her arm anyway "how you feeling princess?" I asked as I checked her bp
"Not great" she croaked
"Oh love, your temperature is really high so I've given you something for that but your bp is okay so we need to wait for your results before I can do anything else, is your throat sore princess?" I said and she nodded "open up then" I said getting my light and tongue depressor "say ahh for me" she did as I asked and I noticed her throat was very red and her glands looked inflamed, "I'm going to feel your neck okay?" I asked and she nodded, "painful?" I asked as I felt to which she just nodded. A nurse then walked in and handed me her results " right rach you've got a pretty serious viral infection so I'm going to put you on really strong antibiotics, they might make you feel a bit strange it that's okay, just trying and get some rest" I told her as I attached the bag to her IV, "call me if you need anything okay babe?" She nodded and I tucked her into the bed and left the room.
