Thursday

I lay my things on my desk, forcing myself to get some work done. I could only feel how tense the high school office's atmosphere is. Out of all the teachers, I'm the one who has to deal with it the most. Since Byron is still on a leave, Mr. Myers, also known as the Principal of Devonshire High School, is right in front of me, doing Byron's job.

I don't mind working at the college since Byron's and my desks are not joined, but here in the high school, it is. I could feel the others side-glancing at us and I have to put my guard up and not let my nervousness show on my face.

I don't even have any work left to do. I just have to do something, or I'll feel severely edgy being in the same room as those who are actually working. I'd leave and go to the college since I have a class there in a while, but it's raining pretty hard. Even if I use my spare umbrella, I'd get soaked.

So here I am, pretending I'm coming up with new class activities and writing them down on my notebook while Mr. Myers is evidently busy, managing Byron's college and high school records-rather, he was keeping them away.

Oh, thank God. Is it over?

Bruce got up, taking some of the files with him, "Williams,"

I was taken aback when my name was suddenly called, "Y-Yes?" I looked up at him, though he had his back turned to me as he head for the door. I stood from my seat, wondering what could it possibly be.

"Could you see me in my office?" He said before glancing at his wristwatch, "Maybe in five minutes?"

"Okay, sir." I nodded, giving an awkward smile.

He gave me a firm nod before he opened the door and stepped out of the room. I swear, the second he closed the door, everyone sighed in relief in unison.

"Finally," Jacob was the first to break the silence, "I can go to my class now."

I saw David tilting his head in confusion, "What were you waiting for?"

"Nothing . . ." Jacob said as he grabbed his things, "It just felt like I couldn't leave while the principal was here."

"Hmm, well, I guess it's the same for me." David agreed, "Bruce is a fun guy, but he can be intimidating when he's serious." David said with a laugh. He decided to follow Jacob as they walked to the door. David abruptly stopped and turned to Rachel who's genuinely busy with something, "Hey, Rachel, we still on for tonight?"

"Huh?" Rachel seemed muddled as she asked, "Oh, sure." She said, paying more attention to her work than David.

"It's raining pretty hard though." David said, looking out of the window.

Rachel looked like she hadn't noticed the weather as she followed David's gaze, "Oh." She said again, "Maybe it'll clear up. I'll text you." She scratched her head.

"Okay, then." David smiled at her before leaving the office with Jacob. With that, Rachel and I were the only ones left in the room. I heard that the others don't have any classes around this time and they get to come to work later than us-pretty damn lucky of them.

"What's this 'tonight' you're talking about?" I naturally pried, asking Rachel with a grin.

"It's nothing, just eating out." Rachel was quick to answer and she doesn't even look like she's hiding something which made me outwardly disappointed.

"But that means you two are going out now?" I kept my grin on my face.

"No, we're just friends." She mumbled, uninterested.
