The third day back at school, Amelia found herself knocking at Dumbledore's office.
"Come in!" The headmaster called. She entered and he smiled when he saw her. "Amelia! How lovely to see you! I trust your holidays went well?"
Amelia had walked up there with a plan of what she was going to say, but in the moment, words failed her.
"It was fine." Her voice was strained.
"Is there something you wish to speak to me about?" Dumbledore looked down his nose, through those half moon spectacles at her.
Amelia's brow furrowed, and she struggled to find the words.
Don't be a coward. She told herself. Be brave Amelia.
"What ever happened to those private lessons?" She blurted. "You said you could help me gain control of my powers, but all you did was tell me a story." Her tone was accusatory and she didn't mind that one bit.
The headmasters smile didn't waver. "Well it seemed to me, your control had greatly increased! I did not think you needed my help anymore." He bowed his head graciously.
"Well maybe I did need help! With other things." She shot at him. Amelia didn't know why she was picking a fight, but something urged her to keep going. "Why didn't you ask?"
"My mistake." Dumbledore replied. "Would you like to continue the lessons?"
"No."
"Then I see no issue." His voice had a certain finality about it, but that didn't stop her.
"There's things you don't know." Her voice shook. Not out of anger, but out of fear for what she had to say next.
"Like what my dear?"
"I know who tried to kill Collin Creevey." Amelia stuck out her chin in an effort to maintain her facade.
"And who might that be?" Dumbledore looked very serious.
"It's me." She breathed. "I did it."
The headmaster was silent for a very long time, so long that Amelia thought she should leave.
"Is this because of your dreams, Amelia?"
She froze where she stood. "I never said anything about any dreams, Professor."
"Yet that does not mean they don't happen." Dumbledore folded his hands, and his kind tone irritated her.
"Who told you about the dreams?" She tried to keep her voice as level as possible, but control was not something that came easily to Amelia.
"Does it matter? I can help you." He offered.
She stepped back a couple paces. "I don't need any help."
"Help does not make you weak." The headmaster looked at her like she was a snivelling child.
"I didn't have help when I watched my brother get ripped apart. I didn't have help while my father tortured me for years. I didn't have any help at his trial either." Amelia was shouting now, and the delicate machines that whirred around the office, were shaking where they stood. So Amelia lowered her voice. "And I didn't have help when my mother, told me she hated me for sending her husband to Azkaban. So excuse me, sir, if I decline your offer now."
"This is something I know quite a lot about. It could benefit you." He got out of his chair and walked towards her.
"Why should I trust you?" She whispered.
"Can you think of a reason not to?"
"It doesn't work like that." Amelia shook her head. "Trust - my trust - has to be earned."
"My dear, is there anyone you trust with these secrets you hold so close to your heart?" He looked down on her with pity.
No. She thought.
Amelia turned away from his gaze. "That's none of your business."
"You're right." Dumbledore gave a great sigh and went back to his desk. "Pray tell, why is it you who tried to kill Collin Creevey?"
"Because I can control the monster in the tunnel." Her eyes trained on the floor.
"You are not the heir of Slytherin, my dear child."
"How do you know that? I can understand Parseltongue!" Amelia shot at him.
"It is not in your heart. You have too much selflessness to be a Slytherin." He smiled at her and Amelia wiped the tears that had fallen from her eyes. "You are a Merlin."
"I'm not quite sure that's something to be proud of."
"Of course it is!" His merry eyes twinkled. "Here," Dumbledore summoned a book from the shelf and handed it to her.
Amelia read the title. "Ancient Magical Families of Great Britain? Sounds awful."
Dumbledore chuckled lightly. "Yes, history can be dull sometimes. But in there you may find the answers to some of your questions!"
Amelia thanked him for it, then left the office, her mind in utter shambles. She headed straight for her dormitory, but bumped into Oliver on the way.
"Amelia! Hey!" His blue eyes shone at her.
"Hello!" Amelia beamed at him.
"You look radiant. How are you?" Oliver grinned.
She fiddled lightly with her necklace before answering. "I'm alright. You?"
"I'm fantastic! I heard Hannah Abbott likes me so that's good news!"
Amelia chuckled and rolled her eyes.
"What?" Oliver protested.
"She only likes you because your fit."
"How do you know that?"
"Because I heard her saying it in the girls bathroom!" She laughed at the joy on his face.
"She thinks I'm fit?" Oliver laughed.
"Everyone does!" It was true, all the girls stared at Oliver with his blue eyes and dark curls.
"Do you?" He asked confidently.
Amelia was taken aback. "What?"
"Do you think I'm attractive?"
She narrowed her eyes. "I choose not to answer that question." She replied before walking away.
Oliver shouted after her, "I'll take that as a yes!"
Amelia didn't stop to talk to anyone, which was quite unlike her. She went straight to her bed and cracked open the book. The book had that certain smell about it, that only old books posess. She found the chapter on the Merlin family and started to read. The only sentences that resonated with her were this:
Every old family has a motto, and the Merlin family's refers to their ideals of always maintaining justice and balance.
Their motto is Lupos sunt vestra ostium, which is Latin for: the wolves are at your door.
