A/n please comment lots letting me know what you think! I appreciate everything! Thanks for reading!

Amelia was not the first to wake up. Hermione shook her for several minutes before she got a low moan in response.

"Thank god, I thought you were dead for a moment. You'll want to get a move on. We're going down to breakfast as a group. " Hermione was already changed and ready to go. So Amelia hopped out of bed and pulled her brand new robes on.

"Lavender! Can you French braid my hair like you did yours?" Amelia asked, being completely useless at all things hair related.

"Of course!" Lavender said, gesturing for Amelia to go and sit on the floor in front of her. "Oooh, your hair is so soft!" Lavender purred as she tugged at Amelia's head.

"Thanks! I saw this thing in a Witch Weekly magazine that says; if you put Bowtruckle saliva in your hair it makes it unbelievably silky. And we've got about a hundred in my backyard, so I tried it out. Glad to hear it actually works and I didn't get all those bites for nothing." Amelia replied. Lavender giggled and finished braiding her hair. Then the four girls, Amelia, Lavender, Parvati, and Hermione went down to breakfast together. It was easy enough to find their way, because everyone was going to the same place. Amelia could hear the whispers and see the pointed fingers as she walked by.

"That's Amelia Merlin!"

"She's supposed to be crazy powerful, cuz of her lineage and stuff,"

"I heard she's a total basket case, and her mothers a squib."

"Did you hear about her dad?" That one was the worst. As if she needed reminding. So she did her best to ignore it all and proceed with her day to day activities.

"I saw you talking to the Weasley twins a lot last night, are they your friends?" Pavarti asked as they walked down a long staircase. She had a subtlety that Amelia admired.

"Yeah, we grew up together and they're a good laugh so we are pretty close." Amelia replied with a smile, it felt good to know someone here. She felt cool for being friends with the twins, and the other girls seemed to agree.

Over breakfast, Amelia told them everything she knew about the teachers and the castle. The girls took her word as gospel, Hermione was especially attentive. They all felt very prepared as they started their first day of class.

The classes were challenging but it wasn't anything Amelia couldn't manage. She already new a bunch of the things the teachers were talking about because, her blessed mother had made sure she was a step ahead of everyone else. The only person who knew more than Amelia was Hermione Granger. Amelia would have found this intimidating except for the fact that nobody liked Hermione. She was really stuck up and a huge know-it-all.

"It's not like we don't try!" Lavender said when Amelia brought it up. "Remember last night? When we asked her who she thought the best looking boy in our grade was, and she said she had more important things to think about."

"It's not our fault if she doesn't want to be friends with us" Parvati said quietly in a matter of fact way. Amelia assumed they were right and dropped the subject.

Amelia, Lavender, And Parvati were sitting with the boys from Ravenclaw on the lawn by the lake after classes one day, when Hannah Abbott came running down towards them.

"We start magic tomorrow! Proper magic, not just note taking." She said between gulps of oxygen. It had been one week since they got there and they hadn't used their wands at all.

Everyone immediately started talking excitedly. Lavender grabbed Amelia's hand and they both giggled with excitement. The Gryffindor girls ran back to the common room where they found Fred and George.

"Hello boys!" Amelia said plopping down on the side between them and running her fingers through her mousy brown hair.

"What's got you so chipper?" George asked suspiciously.

"We start magic tomorrow! I get to use my wand! It's ever so exciting and I can't wait! I hope I'm good, it would be so embarrassing if I was totally useless." Amelia gushed. She loved her wand, which was thirteen inches, arbutus wood with unicorn tail core, and it was very strong.

"Remember when we were that young George? When we were so innocent that wands excited us?" Fred said leaning back with a sense of deep nostalgia. George wiped a fake tear from his eye.

"Those were the days. Good days, filled with hope." George said. Amelia punched both of them in the arm.

"Just because you think you're so above it doesn't mean I can't be excited!" Amelia said as they laughed. They really enjoyed getting a rise out of her. "God you two are so annoying" she said standing up with a small smile playing on her lips. She turned and went up to her dormitory to join the girls.

The next day in Charms class, the whole room was vibrating with excitement. Finally they felt like real wizard getting to use real magic. Professor Flitwick stood up in front of the class and began telling them about the spell to make things fly. Then he had them all practise the motion, swish and flick. This went on for several minutes before he was confident they had the hang of it. It was now show time, they had to make a feather float up in the air using Wingardium Leviosa. Amelia felt a rush as she pointed her wand at the feather.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" She said with a swish and a flick of her wand, the feather rocketed off the desk and hurtled towards Professor Flitwick. It hit him so hard he stumbled back a few steps.

"Well done Miss Merlin! Well done!" He squeaked. Amelia felt rather pleased with herself, and everyone else looked thoroughly impressed. She tousled her hair as she enjoyed the moment a little longer. For the rest of the class she kept practising, but mostly she watched the other students. Terry Boot from Ravenclaw was quite good, he was also very handsome which Amelia took into account. Hermione was of course very good as well, Amelia could hear giving Ron advice which he did not seem to be taking very well.

Something interesting beyond magic did happen while they were enchanting their feathers. The boy from Hufflepuff that she had met on the train, Oliver Rivers, was doing something Amelia really enjoyed. He wasn't enchanting his own feather so on first impression it looked like he had no idea what he was doing. But as Amelia watched, she saw him enchanting the feather of Dean Thomas so it instead of flying upwards like most peoples it flew sideways. The feather kept bumping into Seamus who was getting so frustrated that his feather lit on fire. Oliver clamped his hand over his mouth so he wouldn't laugh too loudly and Amelia had to do the same. Oliver caught her looking at him and he gave a small wink.

The next class that day was Transfiguration. They had to change match into a needle. Amelia concentrated very hard on silver, long, and pointy. When she waved her wand, the hay turned into a needle, but it was three feet long and it was so shiny you could barely look at it. McGonagall was impressed.

"Ten points to Gryffindor! Excellent work Miss Merlin. Lets focus on some more control for this one, try to keep it as close to a sewing needle as possible." McGonagall said with a small smile, as she's placed another match in front of her. Amelia had no success making a sewing needle, but she did make a few more swordlike objects.

As the weeks went on, her teachers began giving her less and less praise as her spells seemed widely out of control. She reeked havoc whenever her wand was out. The constant staring and whispering from everyone was getting tiresome as well. Amelia felt quite worried, she was not the top of her class by any stretch of the imagination. It was obvious that she was powerful, but she felt like a small child with no control over the magic she created.
