Legends of the Merlin Family
It is very important to remember while reading these stories, that these are merely legends. For facts, see chapters 4-7.
The first and arguably most vital legend, is the Legend of the Nine Families.
The first family was the Monatheon's. (Moan- ATH- ee- on) They were strong and practiced in the art of battle strategy and war. This family was known for its courage and it's stubbornness.
The second was the House of Gorodetsky. Who were wise but weak. They had no strength, only knowledge.
The House of Fioravante was third and they were lavish and frivolous in their life style. Often in debt, but held wonderful parties.
The Lattantio family was as slippery as they come. The fourth family knew everyone's secrets and were cruel, cold and calculating.
The fifth family was the Roscureaux's. Who were infamous for their romantic views and their arts.
The Bellgarathon family was the sixth and they were eccentric and inventive, known for their prowess in exploration of every field.
The seventh family, the House of Dellisandro, was kind beyond compare. They welcomed every person and the Three Gods were strongest with them.
The family Flovios was eighth. Nothing is known of their skills.
The Merlin family was the ninth. The Majka of the Merlin's lead all nine families. (For Majka legend, see page 635). They ensured everyone abided by the ancient laws and followed the ancient Three Gods.
The Three Gods that the ancient families worshipped were very simple. God of Self, God of Others, and God of Land. Each one as powerful as it's relation. These gods created the Ancient Laws which every member of the Nine families must abide by. These laws dictated that leaders could only destroy other leaders. Which meant one powerful Majka would be helpless against an army, and only able to slaughter the leader. Many other laws described traditions and customs (see page 56).
In ancient times, magicians and wizards of any kind were not accepted into society. Magic was outlawed and anyone who practiced it were banished. These nine families all practiced magic and therefore were in great danger.
The Majka at the time, a woman by the name of Kori, decided to do something to save her people. She held a gathering of the leaders of the Nine and spoke to them of her plan. Kori told them they would create a kingdom, each family would build a city and all magic folk could live there and worship the Three Gods. The Nine agreed and the kingdom of Kalishterya (KAH-leesh-tier-yah) was built. Nothing is known of the kingdom, only that the Merlin family ruled over the City of Okamila, the capital of the kingdom.
The Nine families lived in peace for many years. Until a great enemy came upon them. He was called Akkedis of the Lizards and Ruler of Dreams. He was a descendant of the Merlin family and as a man, he was angry he had none of the power bestowed upon his sisters. So he went to the Druids and begged for power. He was given it under the condition he used it only for the good of the world. Akkedis did not abide by this and his magic was distorted and turned to something evil. He rode to Kalishterya with grave intentions. Akkedis ensnared the minds of the rulers of the cities and had them burn themselves alive. He threw babies from the top of the walls and the women he took as slaves to be sold or raped. He desecrated the temples of the Three Gods and slaughtered anyone who stood in his way. He took over five thousand people prisoner to be tortured at a later time. Akkedis was famous for his skills with flaying the bodies and removing bones from fingers while his victims were alive.
But Kori, Majka of the Merlin family, Ruler of Okamila and Queen of Kalishterya was not so easily thwarted. According to the Ancient Laws, she rode out to a great battle against Akkedis, which became known as the Game for Okamila. With her Harcos wolf, Cecily, by her side, Kori's army slaughtered that of Akkedis's. He was defeated yet not destroyed. Kori banished him from Kalishterya, but Akkedis was not finished. He vowed to one day return to Okamila and take back what was his.
The kingdom of Kalishterya is hidden to all those who are not from the families of the Nine. For those who are, they need only find the Red Tree.
There is a prophecy about the greatest Majka that Kalishterya has ever seen. The original one is lost, but it speaks of a Daughter of Wolves and one who would unite the Nine forever. She would be clever as she is kind and brave as she is beautiful. The Three Gods would bless her in every way and she could destroy Akkedis for good.
As a reminder, the above is all legend. The only parts historians know for fact, are the nine families who disappeared together. The kingdom and the Red Tree have never been found, the most experienced witches and wizards have attempted with no success, which leads us to conclude it is merely a story about ancient families who died out long ago. Maybe the cities existed once but the amount of magic used to keep them hidden has surely run out. No doubt they are all gone now.
Some of these families are still of course prominent today but they are much less powerful than they were.
The Legend of the Nine Families and the Game for Okamila are two of the most famous Merlin family legends. They depict the strength of the family and especially the strength of the Majka.
In order to become a Majka, a Merlin woman must be blessed with a gold Harcos wolf.
There is nothing more known about Kalishterya or Okamila or even what happened to Akkedis.
The End.
