It was late, after dinner when Amelia went to see Harry in the hospital wing. She sat down beside his bed and placed the chocolates she brought him on the small table next to her.
"Hey." Harry smiled at her.
Amelia took his hand in hers and smiled back at the boy with the green eyes. "How are you doing?"
"Pretty terrible." He admitted.
"I heard about your broom." She didn't quite understand it, but she felt the need to speak to him softly and slowly, like he was very sick.
"Yeah," he looked down at their hands clasped together.
Amelia felt rather vulnerable and weak, looking at Harry now. "You scared the shit out of me when you fell. I don't think I've ever felt my heart beat faster."
"I- I'm sorry?" He stuttered.
She laughed,"you really don't have to apologize! I don't think it was your fault!"
"It wasn't anyone's fault I suppose." Harry said.
"I suppose not." She stared intently at him and it seemed to make him nervous so Amelia turned away. Pulling her hand from his, she looked at all the things people had brought him, the pile of sweets stacked rather precariously on his bedside table. "Look at all the people who love you." She laughed.
"Yeah, perks of nearly dying." He chuckled.
"You know, there's a good Shakespeare sonnet about that."
"About what? The perks of dying?"
Amelia laughed again, there was a certain magic in her clear laugh that seemed to confirm the best in humanity. "No! About people being nicer to you when they think they're about to lose you."
"Well I guess that makes sense."
"I guess it does." She gave him a half smile that didn't seem to reach her eyes. After a pause she suddenly said, "I hate those Dementors."
"At least you don't pass out whenever they come around." Harry said bitterly.
"It doesn't make you a coward." Amelia firmly stated.
"It is embarrassing though."
"Try not to let those assholes get you down. I mean I know it's hard-"
"I think you're probably the only person who knows how hard it is." Harry looked at her and Amelia felt self conscience for a moment.
"I suppose that's true. You and me, both social pariahs at some point or another." She chuckled lightly. "It's pretty horrible isn't it?"
Harry gave a small grin, "like when people think they know everything about you?"
"Sometimes they do!" She leaned in. "People just come up to me and tell me things about myself and I have no idea how they know it! It's scary really."
"It's a bit messed up when you think about it." Harry's voice went quieter.
Amelia tugged at the necklace around her throat. "Not as messed up as people trying to kill you." Her voice was barely more than a whisper.
"I suppose that's another thing I think only you can relate to." The boy with the green eyes looked straight at her.
"I suppose you're right."
After some small talk Amelia left Harry and went back to the dormitory. She picked up the book about her family legends and opened it to the page she was last at. A small piece of parchment fluttered to the ground and under her bed. Amelia stooped to pick it up. Unfolding it she read:
Dearest Amelia,
I hope you enjoyed the events at the Quidditch match today, I orchestrated them especially for your amusement. I do adore a little brush of death, don't you?
Say hello to Harry for me, won't you?
As always,
Akkedis sends his regards. The paper floated down from her fingers and fell upon the floor. Her breaths seemed to be the only sound in the world and the blinking of her eyes had slowed. Amelia felt the earth wash away to nothingness and she was left sitting on her bed, alone.
Since the moment she had met Harry Potter, Amelia had a strange connection to the boy. Something about his kindness drew her towards him. In her mind, Harry was innocence. He wasn't cruel or rude or malicious. He was kind and loyal and exceedingly brave. They were so alike in so many ways and the fact that this boy was still safe after everything he had been through, gave Amelia a strange sense of comfort that she might be okay too.
Not only had Akkedis gone after one of her friends, he chose Harry.
Amelia felt her blood rush to every nerve in her body. She felt angry. So unbelievably angry that this person was able to hurt her and the people in her life and there was nothing she could do about it. Amelia wanted to find Akkedis and rip out his heart and shove it down his throat. She wanted to slaughter every piece of his existence.
But she didn't even know what he looked like.
She didn't know anything about him and he seemed to know everything about her.
The wooden chests and bed posts started to rumble and shake. Amelia looked down to see her hands doing the same thing. She needed to calm down or the entire room would probably explode.
"aperire animo" Amelia whispered and it worked almost instantaneously.
She was exhausted from being alive today, so she put the book away, threw the note out the window and tucked into bed.
Her dreams that night were more terrifying than usual.
She was walking down a long corridor and a small lizard was walking beside her. She tried to shoo it away but the reptile stayed where it was. Then another joined them. And another and another and another until the entire hall was covered in little green bodies.
She ran out of the hall, stepping on the lizards as she did so until she reached the end. It opened into her golden field, just outside her house.
Amelia turned around, the corridor was gone and in it's place stood a tall, faceless man. In his arms was a young girl, with the face of a wolf. Her hand outstretched towards Amelia.
Then the faceless man took a sapphire encrusted knife and slit the young girls throat. The blood spewed out in bursts of red and the child choked, gasping for life.
Amelia screamed, unable to move. Her only thought was of that child. That beautiful little girl with the face of a wolf. Suddenly the faceless man disappeared and she was able to move. Amelia ran towards the girl and held her in her arms, rocking her back and forth as she slowly choked out her last breath. She sobbed into nothingness and the world slowly left her into darkness.
