Chapter 9

Dair

“How’s our little girl?!”

“Hi Mom, hi Dad.”  Faye hugged them both tightly as they walked through the door.  “And I’m not little anymore, remember?”

“You’ll always be our little girl to us.”  Lisa, Faye’s mom, smiled, gripping Faye’s chin.

Faye rolled her eyes and smiled back.

“And how is the birthday girl?”  Lisa maneuvered around Faye, stretching her arms out to me.  “Oh you look so beautiful, Dair.  Happy birthday, honey.”

“Thanks, Lisa.”  I said as I hugged her.

“Oh, and who is this?”  Lisa asked curiously, eyeing Harry as he stood beside me.

“Harry.”  He held a hand out to her.  “Harry Styles.  Pleasure to meet you.”

She shook his hand, smiling in awe.  “You seem like quite the charmer, perfect for Dair.”

My eyes widened as I blushed a little from embarrassment.  Harry was smirking as he looked at me through the corner of his eye.

“Oh, we’re not necessarily together.”  I stammered.  “I-I don’t really know what we are but…uh…”

Lisa tilted her head slightly, looking confused.  I noticed everyone else also had their eyes on me waiting for me to explain and I realized I should have just kept my mouth shut.

“Um…nevermind.”  I said shyly, placing my fingers on my temple and awkwardly looking away.

“Well couple or not, you two look good together, one in black and one in white, it’s like an angel and a devil.”  She chuckled.

Harry and I exchanged knowing smiles.

“Although I’m sure you’re no devil.”  Lisa added.

I watched Harry attentively, anxious to hear his response.  He was smiling so wide like he was about to burst out laughing.

“No, not at all.”  He managed out.

Faye huffed loudly causing everyone to look at her.  She had her arms crossed as she shrugged, pretending not to know why all eyes were on her.

“I ordered pizza for dinner.”  She commented, changing the subject.

“Pizza?”  William, Faye’s dad, said with a slight look of disgust.

“It’s Dair’s favourite, Dad.”  Faye said firmly.  “And it’s her birthday remember?”

“Yes Faye, I know.”  He retorted, giving her the same attitude she gave him.

“I’m just going to go wash up before the pizza gets here.  Excuse me.”  I quickly rushed off to the bathroom, feeling everyone’s concerned eyes on me but I ignored them.

I shut and locked the door behind me and ran my hands through my hair, gripping it in frustration.  I couldn’t do this.  Faye had little tiffs with her parents just like any normal person but today I just couldn’t handle it, my parents being gone, her fighting with her parents, Harry and her being at odds; I knew I should have just stayed in bed.

I was startled by a sudden knock on the door.

“Dair?  Baby, are you alright?”  Harry’s deep voice sounded.

I sniffed and wiped my face of the few tears that had sprung from my eyes before opening the door to a very worried Harry.

I forced a smile.  “I’m fine.  I’m just washing up before dinner.”
