Chapter 18

Bailey's POV

I strode right down the hallway to the Law classroom. Today is Tuesday and the professor will be giving us our characters for the up-coming case that we're doing. I have part of the afternoon to study on what I'm going to say as my person before volleyball practice.

Once I get in the room, I avoid any eye contact with Niall. I could tell he was staring at me. His body rose from his seat. I quickly rush over to my chair and sit down, giving him no chance to stop me. Defeated, Niall went back to his desk. Aubrey talks to me about her date with Kyle.

"It gets better!" She squeals at the end. "He asked me to be his girlfriend!"

I jump out of my seat and she follows suit.

"Oh my god, Aub!"

We sit back down and she dives into all of the details.

"At the end of the date we were kissing - like a lot - and we were just completely making out. So then, Kyle briefly pulls away and says, 'be my girlfriend' and kisses me again! So hot, right?"

My mouth instantly becomes dry and my smile fades. The light conversation that Niall is having with Chase is muted as well. His head turns to look at me. I swallow the lump in my throat.

Kyle asked Aubrey out the same way that Niall did to me.

"Are you okay?" She questions curiously.

I'm frozen in my seat. The best I can do is nod.

"Bailey.." Niall warily says.

"Stop," I hush, turning my head to him.

Thankfully, the professor walks in just then, and we're forced to pay attention to him.

It takes me a minute to snap out of my daze. Everyone is getting out of their seats to check what role in the case they're playing. The professor has set up a list in the back of the room.

When Aubrey told me that she got asked out the same way I did, my body numbed. I wouldn't have imagined taking such a hard hit from this. Niall hurt me beyond imagine. That day, I lost the boy that I was slowly falling for. He's gone, and I've been replaced. I thought we had something special.

Aubrey had told me numerous times that him and I would be the "adorable athletic couple." Every time that we had practices on the same day, Niall would pick me up and we would walk over to the stadium for me to watch the rest of his practice. He would always usher me down so I could wear his SnapBack. I yearn for those days to be back. But I know they won't.

I told Aubrey about how he stopped me after that one Law class. I had yelled at him repeatedly and he was caught. She said in reply, "Maybe he wants to apologize. You should talk to him." No thanks. He can have whatever he wants from that cheerleader. Or any girl, really since everyone fancies him so much.

"Bailey, you're prosecutor," Aubrey cuts me out of my thoughts. I'm still sat in my seat.

"Prosecutor?"

"Yeah! You're so lucky! I'm just part of the jury."

Aubrey sits down next to me.

"Are you sure that you're okay?" Her voice lowers.

"Mhm," I nod, unsure of my voice.

"Now that everyone has their parts, I will know tell you the story line towards this case..." The professor rambles on.

He explains that in this case a boy has killed his sister's husband. The man is found dead in his bed. It's found out that he was mudered around two-thirty in the morning. The killer is suspected to be a guy named Jack. He has always despised the man. Fingerprints were found throughout the room, and they traced them back to Jack.
