Chapter 58

Bailey's POV

When the car pulls into the short driveway, Niall's the first one out. I hop out shortly after, watching him as he independently strides right up to the front door and disappears inside.

My face falls, I can tell. Hastily, I try to catch up and I practically run across the pavement and up to the door.

With a sudden jolt, my body flings forward, tripping on the slippery ground. My reflexes act and my hands fly out to land on the ground first, my knees and legs following suit. I groan out in pain.

This day couldn't get any worse. Niall's ignoring me and now my knee is all scraped up.

I twist my body around on the wet sidewalk, examining my knee. Deep red blood droplets ooze out of the cut.

I squeeze my eyes closed, I've always got wigged out at the sight of blood. When I was ten years old, Danny took me to a park that had a really large playground right in the heart of the greenery. I climbed straight up to the top where a ring of monkey bars took you across to another side. Me being me, my arms were too frail and couldn't keep me up. I fell straight down to the rough chips below, slicing my kneecap. I still have a small scar to this day.

Caught up in my childhood injury, I finally come back to reality. The rain has washed away the blood that seeped down my leg, but fresh blood arises in the cut.

I force myself to stand up, remembering that Niall is probably wondering where the hell I am and why I'm not following after him.

I hobble towards the door on a pulsing kneecap and when I open it, Mrs Horan appears down the hallway, wiping her hands on an apron. Her eyes dart down to where my hand is currently holding the wound.

"Oh my goodness, Bailey, what happened?"

She rushes forward to me, but I hold my hand out to stop her. Tears are forming at my eyes.

"I'm okay, I just need to talk to Niall right now. I can clean it up later." I hurry up the stairs without another word.

I swipe away the moisture in my eyes with my free hand, preparing myself to face Niall on the other side of the door.

I didn't mean to be so short with Maura, it's just that I finally have Niall home and of course I'd fall and need to aid my knee while I should be convincing my boyfriend that I really didn't cheat on him.

The blood won't stop and it's seeping through my fingers. Just as I reach out to the door handle, it swings open, making my heart beat one hundred times faster than it already is. Niall is stood there and he blankly stares at me.

"Did you want some sort of invitation to come in here?" His eyebrow raises.

"N-No, I just.. I fell so it took me a bit to get up here." My voice cracks and Niall's vision diverts to where my smeared red hand is cupping my knee cap. His whole expression changes in a split second.

"You fell? Where?" Niall urges quickly. He opens the door wider only for him to join me in the hallway. Niall crouches down in front of me and cautiously removes my hand.

"Outside on the pavement, I-I'm okay though."

He ignores me and rises back up to his normal height. Niall slings my arm around his shoulder and slides his under my legs. I'm knocked off of the ground and swept into his hold. I stare up at him, our faces level now, with shock. I didn't think he would do this out of everything I imagined.
